IPNEWS-Monrovia: Montserrado County District #8 former Representative, Rufus Neufville writes the 54th Legislature to criminalize ‘persistent nonsupport’ in Liberia, amid increasing concerns over the failure of some fathers to support their children.
Speaking at a news conference Tuesday, March 7, 2023 in Monrovia, Rufus Neufville who is also the Executive Director of The People Action Network stressed that the abandonment of children by their fathers’ is causing untold hardship on struggling mothers nationally.
The former lawmaker wants the 54th Legislature to review the Domestic Relations Law that speaks about fathers to support their children, stating it is weak.
He averred that some irresponsible fathers feel that supporting their children is optional, adding that many girls are compared to forsake their schools and dreams to pay attention to their children as single mothers.
Ambassador Neufville, who once served as Chief of Protocol of Liberia, also believes that the new law to criminalize persistent nonsupport that is asking the lawmakers to make, will determine who are gainfully employed with government or nongovernment sectors, by that it will be known whether fathers are deliberately abandoning their children, leaving the mothers as sole caretakers.
Concluding, he attributed the increasing wave of the act of persistent nonsupport to the fathers of children.
