IPNEWS: The Liberian Forestry Development Authority says Liberia still has 43% significant portion of the Upper Guinea Tropical Rainforest.
Speaking at a Press Conference Thursday, at the entity’s office in Paynesville, FDA Managing Director C. Mike Doyen, stated that Liberia’s 43% rain Forest constitute a significant portion of the forest within the region, which has made mandatory for several reforms to solidify Liberia’s current Forestry Management activities.
MD Doyen said Communities which utilizes their forest through the Community Forestry management program for economic, social and environmental benefits have do so with full protection of the government of Liberia.
He stated that those rights to forest resources including the third-party forest management agreements are integral part of the government reform agenda. However , MD Doyen pointed out that FDA will continued to ensure a comprehensive review of the planning process of the third -party management community forest for full compliance and proper forest governance.
Mr. Doyen than moved to setting up of strategic team that will ensure full compliance of the forest governance process.
Those named are : Atty. Yanquoi Z. Dolo as a Chair who holds BSC in Forestry, LLB in General Law, LLM in Environmental Laws, with Mr. McKay Co-chair ; who holds BSC in Forestry, MSc in Environmental Science.
MD Doyen further names Atty. Gertrude and Mr. Edward Kamara with also BSC in Forestry, MSc in Forestry LLB in General law and BSC in Forestry respectively to work along with the team.
The team shall fully utilize the resources and expertise of the Law Enforcement Division and the Confiscation Unit of the FDA to ensure the unhindered compliance process.
Meanwhile FDA Managing Director, C. Mike Doyen has assured members of the forest management team that the objective of the team to conduct a comprehensive review ans Authorized Community Forestry planning process in identifying compliance Level of planning requirements and harvesting requirements of community forest actors shall be fully supported.
He added that as part of this vigorious reform process, Management team will conduct a week long desk review before its first monitoring field visit, and ensure no new export permit from commercial Use Contractors are processed.
FDA Managing Director: “The team will commence executing a 100 days mandate from August 30, 2021 and report to the Managing Director of the Forestry Development Authority.
Expecting outcomes from these engagements will be the revision of existing community Forestry and documents that are vital to the peoper management of Liberia’s rain forest.”
