Breaking News! CAF Upholds Banned on Liberia S.K.D. Sports Complex for ‘unfavorable Playing Condition’

IPNEWS: The confederation of African Football (CAF), says it has made a formal prohibition on the use of the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex or any other stadium in Liberia for the qualifying matches of the World Cup by FIFA, Qatar 2022, starting from 30 August to 7 September window due to ‘non-Compliance’ during the time of inspection.

In an official communication to Liberia’s Football Association Secretary General, Isaac Montgomery, a copy of which is in the possession of IPNEWS, CAF, Secretary General, Veron Mosengo-Omba, stated that the decision which is pursuant to Liberia’s Football request to play the qualifying match-day 2 for the FIFA World Cup against the Central African Republic, at the Stade de le’ Reunification Douls (Cameroun) on September 6 at 16H00 GMT.

CAF Secretary General reminded the LFA to ensure that it addresses itself to comments and remarks from the inspection conducted on August 18, to ensure that SA.K.D Sports Stadium is approved for further CAF competitions.

The communication further requested the LFA to provide CAF with action plan including the tasks and deadlines for the finalization of works on the stadium, to include progress on renovation works.

Furthermore, the communication highlighted that ‘CAF Stadium Requirements ‘including needs of the stadium and sets out the minimum requirements to fulfil for a stadium to be homologated by CAF.

Meanwhile, The Liberia Football Association (LFA), has acknowledged receipt of CAF noticed banning the S.K.D. Sports Complex.

In a post on its officials Facebook page, the LFA stated that it has been lately informed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) of the decision to not approve the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium for the World Cup qualifying match, Liberia v CAR on 6 September which contradicts the initial communication from CAF dated 15 August of a one-match approval.

The LFA release noted that the authority of CAF has noted a ‘’setback’’ in the progress made on the quality of the pitch which it said occurred last week even though the inspection team conceded that considerable works have been done worthy of the one-match approval.

Contrary to CAF Secretary General’s communication, the LFA release noted that ‘A statement from CAF’s 15 August communication to the LFA Secretariat summarily quoted, ’grant the SKD a one-match approval for use on Match day (1 & 2) and after in the event of non-implementation, the stadium will be formally prohibited.’

However, in CAF latest communication dated 24 August, it said due to the need to ensure the best playable conditions in the upcoming qualifying match, the following decisions have now been taken:

“Formal prohibition is made to use the SKD Sports Complex or any other stadium in Liberia for the qualifying matches of the World Cup by FIFA, Qatar 2022, starting from 30 August to 7 September window due to non-compliance as at the time of inspection.”

“Your national association is requested to play the qualifying Match day 2 for the FIFA World Cup against Central Africa Republic in Stade de la Reunification Douala (Cameroon)on September 6 at 1600Hrs GMT.”

“Hence, the LFA takes serious exception to the communication and has vehemently reacted following galvanization of funds and subsequent purchased of air tickets for all its players from abroad to Nigeria and back to Monrovia including hotels costs a combination of accommodation and feeding.” The details of the CAF statement noted.

However, the LFA stated that ‘it is worthy to note, that all this after CAF has encouraged the LFA to continue the ongoing renovation program and to confirm the purchase of all required stadiums.

Earlier this year CAF banned Liberia from hosting World Cup qualifiers at the SKD sports complex.

In a statement on May 2, 2021, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stated that it has banned the Samuel Kanyon Doe (SKD) sports complex from hosting the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

The decision by CAF followed an earlier report on the SKD, which included video and photos evidence.

In a letter to Liberia Football Association (LFA) secretary-general Isaac Montgomery on 2 May, CAF deputy secretary-general football and development Anthony Baffoe said the SKD “doesn’t meet the set CAF stadium minimum requirements and consequently is not approved for the qualifying matches”.

Baffoe has given the LFA up to 7 May to select a neutral and approved venue within CAF’s territories to host their “home matches”.

“Kindly note that incase of failure to provide the requested information, CAF will fix the venue in the opponent’s home stadium. Once again, we emphasize that quality stadiums are fundamental for the development and progress of African football, hence the regulations and its requirements compliance be implemented strictly by CAF,” Baffoe said.

Liberia will have to find approved-stadiums in Morocco, Guinea, Ghana and Ivory Coast among others.

The LFA has also informed the Liberian government, thru Ministry of Youth and Sports, about CAF’s latest decision as Liberia prepare to take on Nigeria in the World Cup qualifiers in June.
