Over COVID-19 Fight,is Liberia Following U.S. vainly? As Infection rate heightens

IPNews-Monrovia: Suspicion continue to built around the government of Liberia commitment to the fight of the coronavirus pandemic.

Liberia may be up 410, with a total of 137 comfrimed cases from other counties, 31 deaths and a total of 206 recoveries, while the United States stand at 1,994,283, in total confirmed cases with a total of 112,967 deaths, yet both governments continues relaxation of lockdown.

Liberians both at home and abroad are incrreasly worried about the government of Liberia recent announced relaxation of the lockdown and wonders as to whether Liberia is following the United States vainly regardless of the high-ech medical infrastructure of the United States.

Observers reviewing the paradigm shape of President Donald Trump stands on the fight against COVID-19, insist the trends are similar in concept and effect.

The medical experts both in Liberia and the United States continued to alarm of willful neglect of various public health regulation proposals promulgated by their Incident Management Systems.

On today President Donald Trump announced measures to reopen the U.S. ecomony regardless of earlier warnings from the U.S. Center for Disease Control-CDC.

Trump said in a message carried live on CNN that “The country is opening up come what may, despite alarming indications that the coronavirus pandemic is intensifying its assault”.

Trump says the virus is now reduced to just the “embers” and “ashes” of a spent pandemic as patience for nationwide lock downs fades and states aggressively open up.

The facts say the opposite. Another 1,299 Americans died on Tuesday and more than 112,000 people in the US have died from the disease. There are now more than 2 million confirmed cases in the United States.

Trump is not marking these deaths, just as he was reluctant to immediately honor the first 100,000 Americans who passed away before that terrible milestone was reached — barely two weeks ago. And this is well before the feared fall resurgence of Covid-19, in the absence of reliable treatments and with a vaccine still months away.

The President has been cajoling for reopenings for weeks, banking on the ebbing patience of a gregarious and industrious people who don’t take well to being told to stay home. He’s been ostentatiously moving around the country without a mask — even if such behavior by the head of the government sets a poor example and shuns precautions that could keep Americans alive.

Trump is not just defying the virus — he’s poking a stick at officials’ warnings to avoid large gatherings, planning a rally in Oklahoma next week and others in four states where infections are heading up after that. Vice President Mike Pence — who heads the White House coronavirus task force — on Wednesday tweeted a photo of his visit to crammed-together campaign workers, none of whom were wearing masks or social distancing. He later deleted the tweet.

Increasingly, as airlines add flights, schools prepare classes for the fall and Americans balk at the idea that trips to the beach are off, it seems he may have made a shrewd bet — at least within the narrow political calculus that motivates his actions. More and more people seem willing to live with the disease and its awful cost — at least those who have not personally experienced its deadly potential — if it means recapturing a semblance of their normal lives.

“Americans are on the move and they can’t be tied down and they can’t be restrained,” Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas said on Wednesday.

But such decisions are coming without the honest, unprejudiced advice of a President whose most fundamental duty is to keep Americans safe and who has suppressed the ability of public health officials to speak to the nation from an authoritative White House backdrop.

The notion of a prolonged battle against a virus that is the “worst nightmare” of the government’s top infectious disease specialist Dr. Anthony Fauci, doesn’t fit into the President’s electoral plans. That’s one reason why Fauci, and the administration’s other top coronavirus expert, Dr. Deborah Birx, haven’t been seen at a presidential podium in days.
The default position of the President and many state governors is now implicitly that the country has stopped trying to halt the disease in its tracks — but will just have to live with it — though the apparent position has been reached without public discussion.

There’s been no moment when the President has come clean about the costs of opening up with the nation he claims has already “prevailed” over the disease.

“We want the continued blanket lockdown to end for the states. We may have some embers or some ashes, or we may have some flames coming, but we’ll put them out. We’ll stomp them out,” Trump said Friday.

Here in Liberia, the President of the Republic of Liberia, Dr. George Manneh Weah, on June 6,2020,  stated that the state of emergency which is due to expired on June 9, 2020 will not be renewed.

President Weah said given the country’s level of experience with the Coronavirus and its mode of transmission, the strides being made in its containment and in view of developments in other countries, the need for further extension of the constitutional measure is not required.

He said the situation will be assessed going forward. The Liberian Leader has called on health authorities in the country and other related government agencies to continue to enforce the stipulations of the public health laws in order to ensure that there is strict adherence to the protocols against COVID-19.

Importantly, President Weah toextended by two more weeks guidelines intended to prevent the spread of the virus, with the following modifications:

1) All are now required to be indoors by 9pm, instead of the previous time of 6pm.

2) The restriction requiring people to stay indoors at a certain time of the day will be lifted in counties that have not reported any case of the disease so far.

3) Movement to and from counties not yet affected by COVID-19 will be restricted.

With the exception of basic supplies, all other such movements between/amongst counties are prohibited.

4) Opening of the Roberts International Airport to commercial flights on the 21st of June.

5) Hotels, guest houses, gaming centers are to reopen beginning the 21st of June, with the observance of the required health measures

The President instructed the Ministers of Transport and Health; the heads of the Liberian Civil Aviation Authority, the Liberian Airport Authority and the National Public Health Institute to publish the health protocols that will be instituted once the airport resumes operations.

The government admonished everyone to continue to adhere strictly to all the safety measures intended to halt further spread of the virus in Liberia, including social distancing and regular hand washing. The wearing of face masks in public places remains compulsory. The joint security will continue to enforce these rules. All other protocols that were previously announced not amended by this release remain in force.

The government of Liberia stated that in the wake of consensus by West African countries that are members of the West African Examination Council to administer this year’s WASSCE exams for 12th graders in August 2020, President mandated the Ministers of Education and Health to promulgate guidelines for the return of students in the 12th grade to class this June.

With those similarities, observers warned that the worst may just be on the horizon in the fight against coronavirus.
