— Extols Him for Signing of WECC Document
IPNEWS: The Standard Bearer of the New Liberia Party (NLP) has taken President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to task for what it considers a vague report presented to Liberians on the account of his 100-day deliverables.
It could be recalled that, while delivering his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) before the Legislature in January of this year, the Liberian leader outlined a number of interventions that his government would make within its first 100 days in office. Key among them were captured under the pillars of education, health, road infrastructure, good governance and rule of law, transparency and accountability.
Predicated on those promises, the 100 days ended May 1, 2024 with the LiberianChief Executive reporting what he said has been achieved during the course of time.
However, Rev. Dr. Joshua Tom Turner, a presidential candidate on the ticket of the NLP in a statement issued on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 pointed out that the entire report by the president is vague on grounds that the achievements cannot be quantified or measured.
Rev. Dr. Turner indicates that the President’s reports in the areas of intervention are vague because they cannot be traced so as to establish/measure where the government failed or made success.
“I think the President was not just open-minded to the Liberian people to tell them that he failed to deliver on most of those deliverables. For instance, he mentioned that his government saw the need to support education for struggling students. Now, where can those students be traced and from what institution(s)?
In the first place, what sort of supported was provided? I am mentioning education here because it was one of the main areas promised in his intervention. But the entire report is just like that, completely vague,” he stated.
“The President specifically told us that no car will hitch in the mud after 100 days, is this, the situation? Absolutely, no. I think this government started lying to us too soon.”
At the same time, Rev. Dr. Turner has also frowned on the inability of the Liberian leader to complete the nomination of appointed positions even though he was despite being declared winner of the elections two months before his inauguration.
He stated that this alone can impede any government’s function and this has been one of the reasons why the 100-day promises were not delivered.
The NLP Standard Bearer also lamented habitual swapping and or changing of nominations by the Office of the Liberian presidency, something he says is a mark of an irresponsible leadership.
But on the back of its criticism of the 100-day deliverables, the NLP has extolled President Boakai for the signing and issuance of Executive Order #131, establishing the office of a War and Economic Crimes Court for Liberia.
NLP believes the signing of that Executive Order, which came in the wake of a Joint Resolution passed by the 55 th Legislature, is a decisive step to ending the culture of impunity in the country.
“The President’s action, we believe, is a crucial step to end the culture of impunity in Liberia.”
“We are very excited over the President’s action and want to appreciate him for this. We feel this is the right step in the right direction to bring lasting peace in our country. This action will serve as deterrence to would-be future violators of basic human rights and perpetrators of heinous crimes against humanity. NLP says thank you Mr. President as we look forward to other formalities that will ensure the ensure the provisions of all necessary technical, diplomatic and logistical support needed to bring an end to impunity in Liberia,” added the statement.
