Liberia: Boakai Defies Supreme Court Over Stay Order on Tenured Position?

—- Dismisses NASSCORP Deputy for Gross Insubordination

President Joseph Boakai has with immediate effect dismissed Madam Carmerna Cephas Yeke from the position of Deputy Director General of the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) for alleged acts of gross defiance to his office.

An Executive Mansion release on Thursday, March 21, 2024 claimed that Madam Yeke’s failure to adhere to the high standards of conduct expected of a public servant has resulted in her immediate removal from the post.

The release said the Liberian Leader expressed appreciation for her service to the Corporation but noted that he cannot tolerate any behavior that goes against the best interest of the country.

He also assures the public that the decision has been made with utmost confidence and in the best interest of the Corporation.

At the same time, President Boakai noted that he remains committed to upholding the principles of integrity and accountability in all aspects of governance and will continue to ensure that public servants adhere to the highest standards of conduct.

Meanwhile, since the publication of the release on the official Facebook Page of the Executive Mansion disclosing the immediate dismissal of Madam Yeke, the former Deputy Director General of NASSCORP is yet to break silence on the matter.

It may be recalled, late February 2024, prominent members of the Unity Party were botted out after NASSCORP officials refused to allow a communication signed by President Joseph N. Boakai prominence.

Authorities at the National Social Security & Welfare Corporation (NASSCROP) on Monday, March 4, 2024, resisted the takeover of Cllr. Murvee Kanneh as new Director General without an official announcement by the Executive Mansion.

Cllr. Murvee Kanneh, accompanied by Unity Party officials led by the Party’s chairman, Luther Tarpeh, Bong Senator Prince Moye, presented a communication purportedly from President Joseph N. Boakai, replacing Dewtt Van Bamoos as Director General was thrown out by officials of NASSCORP led by its acting Director General   Carmena Cephus Yeke.

Madam Yeke contended that appointments by H.E. President Boakai are not done secretly but made public on the government official Executive Mansion website.

A copy of a communication in the possession of the authoritative Independent Probe Newspaper points to a communication signed by President Joseph N. Boakai, reacknowledging Dewtt Van Bamoos, as Director General under the tenure provision provided for by law.

Others accompanying Cllr. Murvee Kanneh, were Senator Gboyo Kanneh, (Sister of Cllr. Murvee Kanneh), Cllr. Boakai Kanneh (Brother of the purported nominee), and current head, Liberia Law Reform Commission) and Commerce Minister Amin Modad.

The meeting which ended in a deadlock, saw Unity Party officials let go with an understanding to revert to the President for official pronouncement.

On April 6, 2022, former President George Manneh Weah, appointed heads of the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) Dewitt VonBallmoos and Carmerna C. Yeke as NASSCORP’s Director-General and Deputy Director-General for five years respectively.

Last month, reports emerged of key partisans were behind the scenes middling into appointments of friends and family members leaving out stewards of the Unity Party. Details come in our subsequent publication.
