Liberia Women’s Forum Pays Medical Bill for Stranded Patients at JFK Hospital

By Taisiah K. Merfee

IPNEWS – Non-for-profit organization, Liberian Women’s Forum (LWF), has paid the medical bills of over 13 patients, who were stranded at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center. These mothers and their babies had to over stay at the facility because they couldn’t afford their medical bills after being medically treated.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony held on Friday, August 18, LWF’s chief executive officer, Mrs. Kadi Coleman Porte said the US$1,014 was personal money and it is her own way of giving back to society through her organization.

Madam Porte further said that many Liberians are out there, who don’t have the means of feeding themselves adequately and or can’t afford medical costs. Because of those and other reasons, she and her team decided to come to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center to give back to society.

According to her, it is important to always share with your fellow human beings because the Bible urges us to share with our fellow human and all Liberians should follow this example.

Ms. Porte also used the occasion to admonish those mothers whose medical bills the LWF settled, to go back home and try to put themselves on contraceptives in other to help control their born.

She further said that giving is something that needs to be taken seriously by all Liberians; adding: “You cannot get all the money and people living around you are not benefiting from dying or in need of help.”

According to her, if she had more money, she was going to pay for every patient, who doesn’t have the means of footing their medical bills.

However, she indicated that because of her passion for helping, she will not stop but will continue the works that LWF continues to do.

For her part, Memia Farkeh, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiary said they were very happy to see a true Liberian, who had come to help them pay their various medical bills.

According to Ms. Farkeh, is it in time like these one sees a true Liberian coming to the aid of people in need. She commended Ms. Porte and LWF for the humanitarian gesture.

“What Mrs. Porte has done is more than a magic. To see one person coming to pay this huge amount of money is not for joke.”

She disclosed that some of them have spent over two months at the JFK because their bills couldn’t be paid; adding: “but with the help of God, we will be reuniting with our families very soon.”

The Liberia Women’s Forum is a civil society organization engaged into women’s empowerment, advocacy and social justice.
