Montserrado District #14 Residents Call for Probe against Representative

IPNEWS – Monrovia: Residents of Electoral District #14, Montserrado County, have called on the Independent National Human Rights Commission (INCHR), US Embassy and the House of Representatives to probe their district’s Representative, Mr. Abraham V. Corneh, III.

The residents, under the banner, “Veterans Bureau of Liberia,” said their lawmaker needs to be investigated over his involvement into alleged human rights abuse, orchestration of violence at the Legislature and in the district.

According to them, Rep. Corneh is a key sponsor of violence and an infringer of advocates’ rights in the district. They charged the Representative of exhibiting poor leadership ability and being intolerant to people who speak out against him. They even stated that most of those who differ in opinions with the lawmaker, are brutally attacked publicly, accusing the lawmaker of being the mastermind.

Speaking to reporters Sunday, August 22, in Doe Community, Monrovia, the group further accused Rep. Corneh of harboring “team of gangsters” as office staffers with overarching anxiety to effect violence, causing harms and instilling fears to anyone at the command of their leader. “They can go at any length: including fetching citizens out of their homes, taking them to Vamuco Market, and giving them the beating of their lives,” they asserted.

The group further charged that recently when some “gallant” young advocates, who organized themselves under the banner, “The Movement Against the Re-Election of Hon. Corneh,” demanded the lawmaker to give account of the US$30,000, a member of the movement was allegedly picked up at night by unknown men and taken to VAMUCO Market owned by Rep. Corneh, was beaten, and left for dead.

They further stated that other members of the movement were also attacked on Tuesday, August 17, allegedly by the lawmaker’s staffers when they (movement’s members) had gathered at the Capitol Building to present a petition to House Speaker, Dr. Bhofal Chambers.

According to them, they had gathered to petition the House to open an investigation on Rep. Corneh.

This group of district 14 residents’ Acting Chairman Emmanuel Gonotee pointed out that Rep. Corneh’s actions against their colleagues, Melvin Sackor, David G. Wesseh and several others, has resulted to serious bodily injuries and internal problems.

Meanwhile, they have vowed to resist their lawmaker from participating in any public program or functions in the district, until their concerns are addressed.

When Rep. Corneh was contacted via phone for comments, he, stated that he is out of the country so couldn’t respond until he gets back to the country.
