Senate’s Press Bureau Director Nominated to Replace Eugene Fahngon

IPSNEWS – Monrovia: President George Manneh Weah has nominated Mr. Jarlawah Tonpo, head of the Senate Press Bureau, to replace dismissed Deputy Information Minister Eugene Fahngon.

Until his appointment pending Senate confirmation, Tonpo has served his bosses (senators), who are to approve his leave of their offices, for many years. He is Currently the Director of Press and Public Affairs at the Liberian Senate. He holds Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication and is a Master’s candidate in International Relations (University of Liberia) and a Master’s candidate in Public Administration at the University of Liberia.

There are words out in the public that Tonpo’s confirmation hearing won’t be a tough one the same people who are to give him his ‘Nike sign’ are the same people he has worked with for many years and knows everyone of them to his fingers’ tips; hopefully they know him, too, very well.

Tonpo’s nomination comes after Fahngon, a loud-mouth President Weah backer, was dismissed for what the Executive Mansion said “as a result of spreading false information regarding the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic currently ravaging the country.” President Weah also warned that he will not hesitate to take similar action against any other official of government engaged in activities that undermine established government policy.

Fahngon, who was the second principal spokesperson for the Liberian Government, took to Facebook on Tuesday, June 22nd, said some strong words against the government and even termed the Weah’s handling of the fight against the pandemic as “weak”.

He also said that the President is being ill-advised by members of his cabinet about the current reality of the coronavirus situation in the country; and called for a lockdown to curb the transmission of the new variant of the virus in the country.

This was not Fahngon’s first time to voice his opinion that some officials of government think is against the government. In December 2020, Fahngon also via a live Facebook broadcast said President Weah cannot get re-elected in 2023 if he continues to depend on his popularity. This was after the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) disgracefully lost the Montserrado Senatorial to Senator Abraham Darius Dillon of the Collaboration Political Parties (CPP).

According to him, in order for Pres. Weah to regain the confidence of the public, the President needed to fire some of his kitchen cabinet members.
