EPA Holds Regional Workshop on NDC

IPNews-Monrovia: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held a day long Regional workshop in the Port City of Buchanan, Grand Bassa County on 25 September 2020 to revise Liberia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).

The regional workshop is intended for the revision of Liberia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)) to the Paris Agreement held in Charlie’s lodge, Buchanan City.

The Counties leadership from five countries were in attendance such as Grand Bass, Maryland, River Cess, Grand Kru and Sinoe.

Speaking at ceremony the Acting Country Director of Conservation International- Liberia, Mr. Peter Mulbah Conservation International- Liberia works closely with communities, private sector, the government and civil-sector, the government and civil society leaders to support nature conservation.

Mr. Mulbah further said Conservation International works to spotlight and secure the critical benefits that nature provides to humanity.

Also speaking at the opening of the ceremony, NDC Revision Coordinator, Mr. John Kannah said the revision process is based on a desk review of the Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) submitted by the country in 2015, followed by the collection of data to update the various NDC sectors.

According to the coordinator, this revision which outlines the country’s intended actions to reduce emissions, is in support of global initiatives to combat climate change.

Mr. Kannah further said that the NDC identifies four mitigation scenarios which, when combined, will lead to a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 10 percent in 2030.

He disclosed that the NDC is a product of the Paris Agreement which mandates all Parties to the UNFCCC to scale up their national climate efforts once every five years. The country is expected to submit its revised NDC in 2020, exactly five years after its first submission, consistent with the 2016 Climate Agreement in Paris.

He added that the workshop provides a unique opportunity to engage a broader group of stakeholders in the NDC process and increase ownership of national and sectoral climate commitment.

Liberia became a member of the NDC Partnership in 2018 when the Secretariat accepted EPA’s request for membership in 2018 at the Katowice Climate Change Conference in Katowice, Poland.

The one day event was funded by the United Nations Development programme, Conservation International-Liberia and the European Union.
