IPNews-Bong County: Victims of a recent fire incident in Sinyea Town, Suakoko District are said to be hanging out on their neighbors for food, clothing, shelter and other basic necessities during this COVID-19 pandemic.

Fire gutted the victims’ five bed room house during the morning hours of Saturday, August 29, leaving about 13 persons homeless and destroying several valuables.

Even though the actual cause of the fire is yet to be independently established, eyewitnesses attributed the incident to a cooking fire from one of the rooms in the house.

The independent Probe Newspaper has gathered that there was absolutely no human casualty.

Speaking to this paper, the fire victims described the incident as a major setback at the time when Liberians were gradually recovering from the COVID-19 devastation on the economy.

The house owners Mr. Baba Menepalay and Mrs. Miata Baba explained that they didn’t have a fire in the house but was shocked on have gotten the news.

“We can’t even keep fire in the house. When our sister is done with her food, she keeps the kopot outside. We can’t put anything in the room or house that contains fire. But we are all surprise. We have nowhere to sleep or turn for help” they lamented.

“We were not even around when the fire started. We didn’t take anything from the house. What you see on and with us is what we have now. Our monies, clothes, rice, among others were all in the house as we watched them burn” they emphasized.

They therefore appealed to goodwill individuals, aid organizations and the Government of Liberia to assist them with food, clothing, cash, building and household materials to rebuild their house and restore their pride.

With the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus in Bong, and its adverse impact on the Liberian economy, it is however risky and a hard time for the 13 victims to depend on others for basic necessities; thereby making the need for swift intervention compelling.
