‘Stop rape in Liberia’ , Youth Group makes Passionate call

IPNews-Zwedru City: A collaborating Youth groupings in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County has petitioned the national government to act against rape as anti rape protests become nationwide.

The Conglomeration of several youth and student groups in the county marched through the principal streets of Zwedru with plakas, carrying messages against rape and sexual gender based violence and called on the government of President George Manneh Weah for an immediate intervention to tackle the societal ills perpetrated against more citizens.

The protesters who dressed in all black and students in their various uniforms ended at the Grand Gedeh County Administration building, where female advocate Lydia Sabastine Wayo read out the petition, demanding national government to declare rape as a national emergency and to apply more drastic actions to curtail the act.

The groups recommended the decentralization and enhancement of criminal court ‘E’ for the speedy trail and adjudication of rape perpetrators.

The petition hopes on national government to protect the images of rape survivors and victims of domestic violence by putting in place safe homes and effective DNA labs with specialized technicians for the purpose of providing better care and services.

The Petition was received by Grand Gedeh County Superintendent Kai Farley, who termed rape as a witchcraft attitude that needs to be eliminated.

He praised the protesters for their peaceful proceedings observed during their nonviolent March.

He promised to submit their petition to President Weah for prompt action.
Currently, the country has recorded nearly a thousand rape and sodomy cases across the country beginning January 2020 to now.
