IPNews-Monrovia-Liberia-29 January 2019: The coalition of opposition political parties, inclusive of the Alternative National Congress, former ruling Unity Party (UP) and Liberty Party(LP) have unanimously condemned the second annual address delivered Monday, January 29, 2019, by President George M. Weah in fulfillment of his constitutional Mandate Article 58 of the 1986 constitution at the 54th Legislature.
The group through their spoke person Wilmot Paye, Chairman of the Unity Party, described the George Weah led government as the ‘most corrupt administration, fill with fraud and deception’ that continue to increased poverty for the less privileged and the holistic population of Liberia.
Speaking to reporters at a mini press conference held at the Liberty Party Headquarters, on the Tubman Boulevard immediately after the president Weah address to the nation, chairman Wilmot Paye reflected on the statement of the president dated January 22, 2018, ‘to end corruption and that Liberians will not serve as spectators in their own country’.
Wilmot Paye stated that the President statements are always contrary from his action and implementations, stressing that Liberians are not only spectators in their own economy but they are now also ‘frustrated over the president inability to properly handle the affairs of the country’.
He alleged that President George Weah is running the government on the basis of friendship with few handfuls of people and thus giving rise to foreign business partners who have an ugly reputation to exploiting the Liberian people for their selfish and individual gains.
Mr. Paye said, the misuse of public resources are in constant violation of the Liberian constitution and those involved are moving with impunity instead of facing justice and some think they are beyond reproach.
He said despite President George Weah’s pronouncement that he inherited a ‘broken economy’ , that should in no way give rise to massive corruption leading to the suffering of the common people which would serve as a contributing factor to instability and crimes ranging from theft of properties and other crimes.
The Unity Party Chairman, noted that Liberians have long awaited a comprehensive explanation from the President on how the administration “infused” US$25 million into the economy in response to last year’s monetary crisis and up to present there is no trace of how US$17million of this amount was expanded.
“The President needed to furnish the public with reasonable answers for questions surrounding the missing L$16bn (some say L$15 billion, L$10.5 billion) which was confirmed by the minister of information and it’s shocking that the president did not mention anything about the biggest scandal that brought his government to public ridicule.
The press statement further alleged that the administration of President Weah, has purchased a private aircraft to facilitate the President’s foreign travels and pretending that the airplane belongs to one of his friends which the group claimed that is false and laughable.
In a related development, early yesterday morning the grounds of the University of Liberia main campus opposite the capitol building was a scene of aggression with young people engaging in fist fight and the war of stone throwing .
This tragic incident among young people brings the country to public ridicule and raises serious issue of insecurity thus scaring away investors said Wilson Diayan a citizen trapped on his way from the Capitol Hill community.
Diayan, also stated that the rivalry between the two forces representing the vanguard student Unification party and the ‘Sabu Unit’ poses great threats to peace and stability.
Tension mounted early Monday morning on the Capitol hill when a group known as the Sabu Unit began preventing students of the University from entering, while some students tried resist the Sabu Unit on grounds that the University Administration did not formally communicate the suspension of regular classes and more besides the ‘Sabu Unit’, shouldn’t have been doing the function of state security.
In the wake of the President’s second annual message to the 54th National Legislature, there was high security presence at major corners of Monrovia beginning from 9th street, Sinkor heading to town, while vehicles were also prevented from using the main road through the UN drive , Capitol hill area which created both human and travel congestion.
