AfDB Provides US$2M to Boosts Jobs for African Youth

Fund for African Private Sector Assistance (FAPA), of which the Government of Japan is a major donor, along with the Austrian Government and the African Development Bank (AfDB), will contribute US$923,570 and US$988,202 to finance the Bank’s Fashionomics Africa Digital Marketplace and Entrepreneurship and Innovation Lab (eLab) programs, a release has said. The African Development Bank Fund for African Private Sector Assistance (FAPA) has provided funds totaling nearly US$2 million to its Jobs for Youth in Africa initiative. Both programs form key components of the Bank’s Jobs for Youth in Africa Strategy, which invests in high-growth sectors with potential to promote youth and women’s empowerment, as well as create 25 million jobs over the next decade. “Africa hosts the world’s youngest population, which will double to almost one billion by 2050. The continent needs to create jobs much faster, particularly for women and youth,” said Vanessa Moungar, Director of Women, Gender and Civil Society Department at the Bank. “FAPA’s generous support will go a long way to accelerating the Jobs for Youth Entrepreneurship and Innovation Lab and Fashionomics Africa Digital Marketplace programs that contribute to meeting these needs,” Moungar further remarked on Thursday, September 13, 2018, during the funding announcement event, which was themed, “Entrepreneurs 2.0 – When fashion meets technology.” Attended by staff of the bank, dignitaries, public and private sector stakeholders, the event was also graced by fashion designer PatheO’, known for making the distinctive, colorful shirts worn by the late Nelson Mandela, and Salimou Bamba, Managing Director of Abidjan-based SME development firm, AGENCE CI PME. The Fashionomics Africa Digital Marketplace and Entrepreneurship and Innovation Lab (eLab) programs align with FAPA’s vison to create an investment-friendly climate for micro, small and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs) on the continent. They will also provide platforms for strengthening and promoting entrepreneurship that target women and youth-led businesses. Launched in 2015, the Bank’s Fashionomics Africa initiative supports its “High 5” priorities, in particular, the Jobs for Youth in Africa and Industrialization agenda. FAPA’s latest support for this initiative will enable the development of the digital platform and application designed to increase and facilitate access to markets and finance; provide access to relevant information, mentor-ship and networking opportunities as well as develop the skills, competencies and qualifications of African designers and fashion entrepreneurs.  The eLab program will provide innovative young entrepreneurs with financing, technical assistance and broader ecosystem support. With eLab, “We aim to support the next generation of business owners across the continent,” said Babatunde Olumide Omilola, Manager for Public Health, Security and Nutrition at the Bank. “Target beneficiaries are businesses started by young people and intermediaries that support business development, focusing on the three sectors identified as priorities by the Jobs for Youth in Africa strategy, namely agriculture, information and communication technology and industry.” While addressing bank staff and guests, Takuji Yano, the bank’s Executive Director for Japan, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Austria and Brazil, said, “both projects focus on promoting entrepreneurship and ICT tools as drivers for development. By leveraging technology, African countries can enhance understanding of markets, expand education and employment, and deliver monetary benefits for the informal sector and government alike. We are happy to see this diverse, innovative and creative portfolio of FAPA’s proposals.”

WHO, FAO, GARC Introduces First Rabies Vaccination; Celebrates ‘World Rabies Day 2018’ Tomorrow

BY: Falcon N. Dayrell The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), in junction with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) have introduce a global “United fight Against Rabies” . The initiative which is a joint collaboration provides a common strategy to achieving “Zero human rabies deaths in Liberia and  other parts of the world where there are prevalence of such cases  by 2030”. Rabies is an infectious viral disease that is almost always fatal following the onset of clinical symptoms. It occurs in more than 150 countries and territories, according to statistics. Rabies Infection causes tens of thousands of deaths every year, mainly in Asia and Africa while dogs are the main source of human rabies deaths, contributing up to 99% of all rabies transmissions to humans. The world health organization in it release in Monrovia,  it has warned humans over the dangers of eating dogs and bats due to the spread of infection to humans  through bites or scratches, usually via saliva. Rabies can affect both domestic and wild animals, up to 99% of cases, domestic dogs are responsible for rabies virus transmission to humans. The released further put the transmission of rabies at 40% of people bitten by suspected rabies animals, with children under 15 years of age  being affected mostly . “Immediately, thorough wound washing with soap and water after contact with a suspect rabid animal is crucial and can save lives.” Rabies elimination can feasible or easily be done through vaccination of dogs and prevention of dog bites. Rabies have mostly affects poor and vulnerable populations who live in remote rural locations. Although effective human vaccines and immunoglobulins exist for rabies, they are not readily available or accessible to those in need. Globally, rabies deaths are rarely reported and children between the ages of 5–14 years are frequent victims. Treating a rabies exposure, where the average cost of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is US$ 40 in Africa, and US$ 49 in Asia, can be a catastrophic financial burden on affected families whose average daily income is around US$ 1–2 per person. In keeping with the policy of WHO to improved health services, Liberia will this Thursday September 27, 2018, joined other countries to celebrate ‘World Rabies Day’,  while pet owner will take their pets to receive a post-bite vaccination. Every year, more than 15 million people worldwide receive a post-bite vaccination. This is estimated to prevent hundreds of thousands of rabies deaths annually. Awareness on rabies and preventing dog bites: Education on dog behavior and bite prevention for both children and adults is an essential extension of a rabies vaccination programme and can decrease both the incidence of human rabies and the financial burden of treating dog bites. Increasing awareness of rabies prevention and control in communities includes education and information on responsible pet ownership, how to prevent dog bites, and immediate care measures after a bite. Engagement and ownership of the programme at the community level increases reach and uptake of key messages.
