Pres. Weah Commissions Associate Justice Nagbe; Departs Liberia for China
IPNews-Monrovia, Liberia-27 August 2018:President George Manneh Weah has commissioned Liberia’s newly confirmed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia, His Honor, Joseph Nagbe in fulfillment of the 1986 Constitution. According to an Executive Mansion release, the colorful ceremony took place at the C. Cecil Dennis Auditorium in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today , Monday, August 27, 2018. The Liberian President expressed his fullest confidence in Cllr. Nagbe’s ability to conform to the prevailing legal challenges to proper adjudicate cases in the interest of Liberia. reposed in him, describing him as great man. “I have the privilege and honor to be here for this program in honor of a father and brother who has been given the opportunity to serve our country.” “I want to thank Chief Justice, Francis Korkpor for accepting that our son joins the Supreme Court Bench. Honorable Nagbe, I know you can do the job.” President Weah said. Contrary to wide speculation President Weah appointed Cllr. Nagbe on the basis of friendship, the Liberian leader said the appointment was in keeping with Cllr. Nagbe’s proven hard work and understanding of the law over the years. Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Associate Justice Nagbe used the occasion to thank President Weah for giving him the opportunity to serve his country. He however pledged to do his best to interpret the law into context. It can be recalled that President Weah appointed the former Sinoe County Senator on August 8, 2018 to replace retired Justice Philip A. Z. Banks, who was subsequently confirmed by the Honorable Liberian Senate a week later. Several officials of government as well as prominent sons of Sinoe County, where the new Associate Justice hails, graced the red-lettered commissioning ceremony. Meanwhile, President George Manneh Weah has departed the country today, for Beijing, China to join other African leaders for the 2018 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). The summit with theme: “China and Africa: toward an even stronger community with a shared future through win-win cooperation”, will be convened in Beijing on Sept 3-4. The leaders from Africa and China will meet against the background of a world becoming increasingly multipolar with a globalized rising cultural diversity, and more and more digitalized societies. African leaders, representatives of related regional organizations in Africa and international organizations will participate in the summit. The objectives of FOCAC include equal consultation, enhancing understanding, expanding consensus, strengthening friendship and promoting cooperation between African countries and China. It can be recalled on Thursday July 19, 2018, at the Capitol during the dedication of two newly constructed annexes, President Dr. George Manneh Weah recounted China’s numerous contributions to Liberia, and noted that their contributions will always be remembered by the government and people of Liberia. He said during the occasion: “Liberia and the People’s Republic of China have a longstanding relationship for over 40 years; the relationship continues on the path of growing stronger for the benefits of both the peoples of Liberia and the People’s Republic of China.” The President will also use the visit to explore new frontiers for increased trade between Liberia and the People’s Republic of China for the mutual benefit of both countries. The Liberia leader is accompanied by an array of government officials led by Foreign Minister Gbezohngar Findley, Hon. Eugene Nagbe, among others. While away, the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs and Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Nathaniel Farlo McGill will chair the affairs of the Cabinet in close consultation with the Vice President, Madam Jewel Howard Taylor; and via telephone conversation with the President. The President is expected to return to Liberia on September 9, 2018.
