By T. Lula Jaurey

IPNews-Monrovia, Liberia-28 2018: The World Bank says it will provide fourteen million United States dollars for the construction of the new Redemption Hospital.

Speaking at formal groundbreaking ceremony at the new Redemption hospital site in the Caldwell Sand Beach Community, World Bank Liberia Country Manager, Larisa Leshchenko stated that the provision of the fourteen Million United States dollars is intended to contribute the acceleration of primary health care across Liberia.

Madam Leshchenko said the construction of the new Redemption Hospital will alleviate patients congestion  currently experienced at its New Kru Town central offices.

Laying the first block for the new Redemption facilities, Madam Leshcenko lauded the government of Liberia and its partners for its farsightedness in relocating the Redemption hospital.

“ The World Bank is happen today to be a part of history making. We recount memories of the dreadful Ebola crisis at the Redemption hospital when  there was total overcrowding of the facilities which led to urgent mobilization of the government and partners in ensuring the Ebola epidemic did not spread.”

She further stated that, Redemption is intended as a tertiary-level hospital, but unfortunately it was currently unable to provide such services required of a tertiary hospital due to infrastructural challenges at its current facility but with the construction of the new hospital there are hopes for an increase in that health care delivery.

Madam Leshchenko said as part of the World Bank investment plan for the building a ‘Resilient Health System’ which aligns with the government pro-poor agenda, will remain committed to providing additional grants and other financial assistance to the government of Liberia to ensure there is a total revamp of the health system of Liberia which suffered a major challenge as a result of the Ebola crisis.

“The World Bank is delighted to provide US fourteen million grant to finance the re-building of the Redemption Hospital on this new site here in the Monrovia suburb of Caldwell due to its strategic space which will serve as a regional referral for Montserrado, Margibi, Bomi, Grand Cape Mount and Gbarpolu Counties.”

“Phase 1 of the hospital, the block-laying ceremony for which we are gathered here today, will serve women and children and provide learning environment for medical students and doctors she added.” The World Bank Country Representative outlined.

She assured the government of that World Bank will continue to provide critical support towards the development of the health system and major gaps identify by the government of Liberia.

It may be recalled the existing Redemption Hospital in New Kru Town was built in 1982 under the government of the ‘Peoples Redemption Council-PRC, headed by Master Sergeant Samuel Doe and currently serves as the County hospital for Montserrado, while also receiving referrals from other county hospitals, primarily Gbarpolu, Grand Cape Mount and Bomi counties, including clinical training site for medical students and resident physicians.

Ever since the facility continued to expand over the years, to cope with increasing caseload of patients, which has now turned the facility into a eventually ‘busy health facility in Liberia and located within a densely-populated community, with poorly managed facilities and continued over-crowding offering no space to expand.
