Liberia’s Finance Minister Warns : “Audit Former Pres. Ellen Johnson –Sirleaf Others For Int’l Confidence”

IPNews-Monrovia, Liberia-27 July 2018The National Orator for Liberia’s 171st Independence Day celebration has called on the Liberian Government to audit the government of former President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.

Delivering his oration at program marking the celebration of Liberia’s 171st Independence Day in Monrovia, Liberia’s Finance and  Development Minister , Samuel Tweah said it is important for the government to demonstrate its commitment in the fight against corruption.

Tweah caution that in other to demonstrate fiscal commitment to Liberians and its international partners,the government must begin to hold individuals who abused public resources in the past and present governments accountable.

He Tweah, said it is time for the government to review past audits and act on them, especially where it is proven that past officials abused public resources.

Minister Tweah narrated that corruption has and continued to undermine the development of Liberia, as such, this government which was elected on the matrix of change must fight this menace head on.

“It is unacceptable for few individuals to dissipate public resources while vast majority of the population languished in poverty.” Orator Tweah warns.

The 171st Independence Day Orator Tweah further acknowledged that when the government begins to go after past officials now for corruption, some individuals will consider it as witch hunt.

However, he said this must not stop the government from pursuing this path, even if it chooses to delay same; but it must not allow individuals who abused public resources to go with impunity.

Minister Tweah: “ It is disheartening that after 171 years, Liberia continues to be under-developed; something he said this government which was overwhelmingly elected must change.

He pointed out that the CDC-led government cannot be held liable for the present state of the country’s economy.

Tweah said the current state of the economy is something the government of President Weah inherited from the Unity Party-led government.

Minister Tweah said people should not expect the Weah-led government to solve all of the problems that have existed in Liberia for 171 years in six months.

However, he assured that the government is determined and committed to right the wrongs that have kept Liberia backward since its founding.

On the state of the economy, Minister Tweah said the country economy is struggling as a result of drop in the prices of its traditional commodities including iron ore and rubber.
