UN Officials In Liberia Congratulate Liberians For Maintaining Peace

IPNews-Monrovia-Liberia- 22 March 2018:The United Nations Special Representative to the Secretary General to Liberia and head of the United Nations Mission in Liberia has congratulated Liberians for maintaining peace through reconciliation in the past years after a long lasting civil war in the country.

Farid Zarif, SRSG of the UN Secretary General disclosed this during his key note address at the national peace and reconciliation conference held at the Monrovia City Hall.

The event was organized by Search for Common Ground, NAYMOTE, United Nations and the Government of Liberia was held under the theme “local voices for inclusive reconciliation”.

He described the conference as timely, looking at the fact that Liberians have matured in maintaining peace through reconciliation.

The UN envoy to Liberia added that the just concluded elections is a clear manifestation of what Liberians stand for in peace building and reconciliation.

He told the gathering that peace in every nation is the key root to development, saying that reconciling a nation means a lot to the people of that particular country, asking why Liberians need peace and reconciliation.

The UNMIL boss said UN and other partners together with the Liberian government have done well in the peace process in the country through capacity building, infrastructure, security, education, among others, which he said is part their agenda.

He called on all to spread the message around the country for the good of the country through peace and reconciliation.

In his statement, the Minister of Internal Affairs said the conference is a stepping stone on where they want to see Liberia in peace building and reconciliation at grass root level.

Minister Varney Sirleaf said progress is already made at community level on peace and reconciliation, counties in the country have acquired education on peace building related issues in the country. “The conference is not a waste of time, but timely,” he added

Statements were also made by Justice Kabineh Ja’neh of the Supreme Court of Liberia, the executive director, Liberia peacebuilding office, Liberia, and Aaron Weah, country director, Search for Common Ground, Liberia office.
