Showdown Between Sen. Darius Dillon, EPS Officers at County Meet Finals, But EPS cautions Dillion, others

IPNews-Paynesville, City: An unexpected showdown occurred yesterday, Sunday, January 31, minutes before the commencement of the finals of the County meet tournament between Montserrado and Lofa Counties.

Video footage from the scene circulating on social media, show a gross disrespect towards Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon by officers of President George Weah’s elite Executive Protection Services (EPS). In one of the pictures, EPS officers are seen bodily manhandling a personal bodyguard of the Montserrado County Senator.

The scene drew public attention after Senator Dillon was allegedly barred from entering the Samuel K. Doe Sports Stadium due to what EPS officers termed as bridged of protocol after the Presidential motorcades had entered.

Senator Dillon, who is a known critic of the Weah-led regime, recently, heavily defeated the ruling party’s candidate in the last December 8th Special Senatorial Election claiming nearly 68% of the total votes.

The baring of Senator Dillon, into the stadium following the arrival of President George Weah is now a strange occurrence, prohibiting a public Official access to public facilities after the Presidential entry.

Eyewitnesses told IPNews that the scuffles started when state security stopped Senator Dillon from entering the sports complex. One of the Senator’s guards got seriously hurt.

Sources reliably informed IPNews that the EPS officer, who was in the front of the whole melee and might have caused the bodily harm to Sen. Dillon’s private security guard, is identified as Jerry Lekpeyee.

In one recording from the scene, Sen. Dillon can be heard loudly shouting making inquiries as to why he was denied entry onto the public stadium even though he has a VIP ticket for him and his security details.

In reply to Sen. Dillon, an unidentified EPS officer is heard yelling back and telling the Senator: “It is the duty of the EPS.”

Sen. Dillon, like many other statesmen had gone to rally support for the Montserrado county team which reached the finals after defeating the President’s birth county of Grand Kru a week ago.

Moments after the incident, The Senator posted on his Official Facebook page that the EPS officer behavior of attacking him and his security was unruly and unacceptable.

“Pres. Weah’s EPS continues to disrespect and target me. This disrespect has gone beyond. Even with a VIP ticket clearly displayed, I was embarrassed, refused and blocked from entering the SKD today in the presence of the EPS Director and other state security officers. My personal security guard was harassed, assaulted and injured.”

He recounted that this is the fifth time he has been attacked by officers of the elite Executive Protection Service.

The Montserrado County Senator noted that he had to leave the stadium without entering the field to watch the grand final of the National County Sports Meet between Montserrado and Lofa Counties due to assaults.

“I will formally file this complaint before the Senate for redress! This unruly behaviour is completely unacceptable, and will not allow same to continue going forward,” the opposition lawmaker concluded his post on Facebook.

In a related incident of state security assaults against ordinary people, recently the Sports Writers Association of Liberia-SWAL, alleged that some of its members were assaulted by officers of the Liberia National Police-LNP during other games of the National County Sports Meet.

SWAL called on authorities of the LNP, to ensure an impartial investigation into what it termed as “continued assaults on its members.”

Meanwhile, a release from the Executive Protection Service (EPS), says the EPS expresses dismay over the continuous failure of Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon to observe and abide by established protocols put in place to usher guests at functions that the President is attending.

An Executive Mansion release states that ‘the action by Senator Dillion was disappointingly repeated’ on Sunday, January 31, during the final match of the County Meet tournament, when the Senator without regards to the protocols instructed his personal guards to ignore and bypass security in order to enter the VIP stand at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.

“Spectators entering this section, as was the case with all other gates, were required to present tickets, according to an EPS statement issued late Sunday.”

“Sen. Dillion was also told that every Representative and Senator in the VIP section was there without a personal security, especially when the designated security doesn’t have a ticket.”

“The Senator’s refusal to adhere to these guidelines resulted in a melee during which his security injured an EPS officer and broke the glass at the entrance. But in spite of the unfortunate scene, the EPS offered the Senator the opportunity to enter the VIP stand; a gesture he refused.”The EPS statement read

Additionally, the EPS wishes to remind the Senator and all others bent on provocations that are meant to tarnish the reputation of the group that it will continue to remain professional in the discharge of its duties, and all will be treated in accordance with the EPS standard operation procedure no matter their status.
