INFORMATION MINISTER LAUNCHES LIBERIA MEDIA EMPOWERMENT PROJECT( LMEP)

IPNEWS: Liberia’s Information Minister, Jerolinmek Matthew Piah on today, Thursday, launched an EU-funded Liberia Media Empowerment Project (LMEP) – anchored through INTERNEWS – which will be implemented over 36 months from January 2024 to December 2026.

Minister Piah said  LIMEP’s three expected deliverables: institutionalizing fact checking, strengthening human rights and democratic accountability and supporting the creation of an enabling environment for the promotion of freedom of opinion, expression, and access to information are fundamentally important in the GOL’s communications pathways through the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT).

He lauded the EU for more than half of a century’s impactful partnership with the Government and people of Liberia and INTERNEWS for over a decade support to Liberian media development.

The launch brought together host of national and international dignitaries including European Union Ambassador to Liberia, Nona Deprez, and top Liberian officials, including Human Rights Commissioner, Dr. Niveda C. Ricks, Senator Amara Konneh of Gbarpolu County, and nearly 50 others attended the event.

The European Union funds the 36-month project. Liberian implementing partners include the Center for Media Studies and Peace Building, Messengers of Peace- Liberia Inc(MOP-Liberia Inc), JournalRage, Local Voices Liberia LVL, PAL, and collaborating universities.
