Election Controversy Unfolds in Maryland County Liberia

— As Senatorial Candidate Dr Topor requests recount

IPNEWS: Dr. Wollor E. Topor, Senatorial Candidate for Maryland County, raised serious allegations of electoral irregularities and fraud in the recently concluded elections held on October 10, 2023.

Dr. Topor, flanked by his legal team and supporters, claimed that unscrupulous individuals had allegedly tampered with the results of the votes cast, particularly during the tallying process in Harper City, Maryland County. He asserted that the election results were not impartially conducted, and his complaint, filed within the statutory period, outlined various irregularities.

The candidate accused the Election Magistrate for Maryland County, Hon Saylee, and the hearing officer, Mr. Richard M. Dafuwah, of suspending the ruling due to ongoing tallying processes. Dr. Topor further alleged that a request for a $500 USD bribe was made by the clerk in the case, Mr. Alexander Bai, to rule in his favor. The complaint was dismissed on grounds of insufficient evidence after Dr. Topor rejected the bribe request.

The allegations extended to discrepancies in official documents, with several records not bearing the stamp of the National Election Commission (NEC). Dr. Topor pointed to instances where figures were changed and records not authenticated, questioning the genuineness of the documents.

He demanded a recount of all polling places under question and urged the Supreme Court to grant other remedies under the law. Dr. Topor highlighted discrepancies in the vote count, claiming that the NEC’s pronouncement differed from the official tally sheet issued to him, indicating a margin of 1094 votes against him.

The NEC’s Wednesday, October 18, 2023 pronouncement allegedly showed 11,618 votes for Dr. Topor, while the official tally sheet indicated 11,918 votes. Dr. Topor argued that this 300-vote difference warranted a recount.

The candidate concluded by expressing gratitude to his legal team, the Unity Party, and supporters. He pledged to pursue legal avenues to ensure a fair resolution of the election dispute.
