Liberia: Ruling Party’s ‘Militant Brigade’ Placed Behind Bar for Murder

IPNEWS – The Liberian National Police on Monday, November 27, 2023, charged and forwarded a supporter, who is a member of the Militant Brigade of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), to the Monrovia City Court for the alleged death of three persons.

Defendant Lawrence Williams’ action also left 24 others both males and females, injured on the night of November 21, 2023.

According to the police charge sheet, it was established that Defendant Lawrence is a staunch supporter of CDC, and is a member of the Militant Brigade of said institution, which he has accordingly associated for over two years.

Defendant Williams was charged with the crime of Murder, Aggravated Assault and Recklessly Endangering the lives of people. The Police charge sheet says he criminally, purposely, and intentionally caused the death of three victims Peter Gray, Mariama Kromah, and Varney Sulieman.

The document said the action of Defendant Williams was intentional and indifferent to the value of human lives leaving the investigation with the conviction that there was indeed a motive, especially of monetary and psychological benefit, which he must have received from an unidentified source he elected not to disclose that led to him executing said carnage on the innocent partisans and sympathizers who were celebrating on the night of November 20, 2023 at about 10:00 pm.

The court document said, Defendant Williams deliberately drove an unmarked Grey Hyundai SUV with its headlights off and front passenger door open, into a jubilant crowd of Unity Party partisans and sympathizers while they were celebrating their victory results of the Runoff election by NEC at the Unity Party Headquarters.

According to the police charge sheet, the act of the defendant led to the result of an angry mob consisting of partisans and sympathizers looting and setting ablaze the vehicle at the spot where it was abandoned by Williams.

The victims were assisted by others who took them immediately to various hospitals including the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, Mawah Clinic, and other local clinics to seek prompt medical attention.

Defendant Williams could not convince the investigation of the malfunction of the automatic gear of the vehicle, which he claimed was the cause of the carnage.

The document said when the defendant absconded the scene with the aid of a motorcyclist, he begged and promised the motorcyclist, Adolphus Cooper, not to disclose his location to anyone and that he would give him US$280.00.

The Police charge sheet further said that he refused to turn himself over to police.

According to section 9.1 of the Vehicle and Traffic Law, in the case of accident involving death or serious bodily injuries, the driver should immediately report him or herself to the nearest police station, which

Defendant Williams failed to do so.
