Another Tragic Road Accident; As Collision on Accra-Cape Coast Highway Claims 16 Lives and Injures 40 Believed to be Liberians

IPNEWS: In the aftermath of Tuesday’s tragic motor accident on the Accra-Cape highway claiming sixteen lives, many of whom are believed to be Liberians, another fatal accident has occurred along the Salayea to Gbarnga Highway the same Tuesday, May 30, leaving persons dead, while others remain in critical condition.

The incident has shaken the community, with citizens of Lofa County mourning the loss of their loved ones.

Eyewitnesses report that the driver of the black pickup, whose identity has not been disclosed, was exhausted and had fallen asleep at the wheel, which might have resulted in the accident.

The vehicle was also carrying a heavy cargo load of produce, including passengers when it diverted off the road into the famous Goma Hillside.

Meanwhile, a report from Gomoa Okyereko on the Accra-Cape Coast highway in the Central Region of Ghana, says at least six persons died in a tragic motor accident, and forty others were severely injured. The majority of the victims and survivors according to Frontpage Africa are believed to be Liberians.

The collision involved a Yutong bus en route from Liberia to Budumburam and a fuel tanker heading toward Takoradi colliding at about 5 A.M. on Tuesday, May 30, 2023.

IPNEWS understands emergency services, including the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), swiftly responded to the scene in an effort to rescue the victims. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined, as reported by the GNFS. However, eyewitnesses revealed that the Yutong bus driver had been intermittently straying from his lane throughout the journey.

Winneba Fire Service Commander DO II Kwesi Hughes recounted the sequence of events, stating, “The tanker driver unexpectedly veered into the Yutong’s lane, coinciding with the moment the Yutong driver had also encroached into his lane.” Immediate efforts were focused on rescuing those who could be saved, and they were promptly transported to the trauma and specialist hospital.

The scene of the accident was described as profoundly distressing, with Commander Hughes sadly noting, “In fact, people have been dismembered.” Alongside the GNFS, the National Ambulance Service and the Police Service were present at the site to provide support and assistance during this devastating incident.
