Frantz Sawyer, the son of renowned Liberian politician, academic, and former Interim President, Prof. Dr. Amos Claudius Sawyer, along with members of his immediate family, recently took a giant step towards developing a more vibrant Liberia and Sub-Saharan Region, with the recent launch of The Amos Claudius Sawyer Foundation, registered in Liberia and Chevy Chase, Maryland USA. The Foundation is built on three major tenets: Democratic Governance with emphasis on decentralization, the Rule of Law, and Peacebuilding – subjects to which former President Sawyer dedicated much of his energy and focus.
Liberia has undoubtedly endured disruption and turmoil, with the West African country suffering several political and economic crises, including two civil wars in the space of fifteen years and the outbreak of the Ebola virus ten years ago. Although described as an extremely underdeveloped country, Liberia undoubtedly has huge potential in terms of human capital and vast natural resources. However, such resources have not been effectively harnessed due to the absence of several factors, including good governance.
The Amos Claudius Sawyer Foundation aims to inspire and promote initiatives and dialogue . The Foundation will be challenging the political and economic status quo by bringing together forward-thinking individuals, State and non-State actors, to develop innovative and impactful ideas to improve Liberia and the Sub-Saharan Region. The Foundation will host an in-house Think Tank that will conduct research to generate actionable evidence through primary data and knowledge of the three key areas upon which the Foundation is built. The Foundation will also provide policy advisory services to governments in the Sub-Saharan Region and related institutions in the public governance space.
The establishment of The Amos Claudius Sawyer Foundation is especially timely given the current need to enforce the role of governance in Liberia and the Sub-Saharan region. There is a recognition that with the enforcement of governance and transparency, Liberia, it can serve as a template and example to the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa. Liberia has served as a beacon of pride as the first independent nation on the African continent and was instrumental in serving as an example of what can be done on the continent. It is the desired hope of the Foundation that with the right support in the governance and transparency space, Liberia can return to its historic position as a shining example to the entire continent and world at large.
