Formation of the Rainbow Alliance

It can be recalled in May 2020, in effort to democratically replace the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), in the upcoming 2023 presidential election, 11 registered political parties in Liberia joined forces to sign a declaration of intent to form an alliance called “The Rainbow Alliance.”

The 11 political parties said they are prepared to engage the political landscape of Liberia in a constructive manner and subsequently deliver the country from the hands of self-seeking leaders. According to the Rainbow Alliance officers, there are too many political parties in Liberia that sometimes confuse the people of Liberia which direction to go.

The 11 registered political parties’ executives affixed their signatures to the document establishing the Rainbow Alliance include the Liberia Restoration Party (LRD), Change Democratic Action (CDA), Movement for Economic Empowerment (MOVEE), Democratic Justice Party (DJP), and Victory for Change Party (VCP).

Others include Grassroot Democratic Party of Liberia (GDPL), Redemption Democratic Congress (RDC), Peoples Unification Party (PUP), Vision for Liberia Transformation Party (VOLT), New Liberia Party (NLP) and the True Whig Party (TWP).

Rainbow Alliance Launches Framework Document, Ahead of 2023 Elections – Says It Prescribes Procedures for Inclusion

In July 2021, when the Rainbow Alliance launched its Framework Document, which according to them prescribes procedures for inclusion, the number of parties from its original stage of 11 reduced to seven. The National Executive Committee of the Rainbow Alliance officially launched its framework document to the public to govern the institution.

The Rainbow Alliance which is comprised of seven registered political parties was certificated by the National Election Commission on August 31, 2020 and has since worked in concert with other political institutions in Liberia.

The seven political parties are Movement for Economic Empowerment, Redemption Democratic Change Ture Whig Party, Union of Liberia Democrats, Victory for Change Party, Vision for Liberia Transformation and Democratic Justice Party.

The framework document which includes the constitution, By-Law and Code of conduct are intended to be a working tool to govern the activities of the Rainbow Alliance as prescribed procedures for the inclusion of other political parties.

The Interim Chairman of the Alliance is Mr. Reginald B. Goodridge, Sr, of the former governing True Whig Party.

MOVEE leaves Rainbow Alliance

In October 2022, one of the members of the Rainbow Alliance, the opposition Movement for Economic Empowerment (MOVEE) pulled out of the opposition bloc, The Rainbow Alliance.

The party said through a resolution, its executive committee decided to pull out of the alliance to disassociate itself from the opposition bloc.

MOVEE National Chairman Robert Sammie told journalists in a news conference back then that the executive committee resolved that the chairperson should cut political ties with the Rainbow Alliance.

“Today MOVEE wants to inform its supporters, partisans, and [the] rest of the world that we have communicated officially to the Rainbow Alliance civilly that MOVEE is cutting every tie and association with the Rainbow Alliance,” said Sammie.

According to him, such a decision by the party will now give a clear way and opportunity for its political leader to make political arrangements with another political party, an alliance or coalition that has similar philosophy and ideology.

Meanwhile, the Rainbow Alliance says “The purpose of this Rainbow Alliance is to give voice to the voiceless parties and their many constituencies. We are erasing the notion that they are small or second-class political parties; we will work together to make it works.”

According to Mr. Reginald Goodridge: “We are significant and ready to govern, all political parties, no matter which size, they are a government in waiting. If it does not happen now, it will happen one day; it all depends on our purpose.”

Goodridge further noted that the Rainbow Alliance plans is to govern itself with efficiency, intelligence and good sense, saying all it hopes to do is to practice so that when it is given the opportunity to govern Liberia, it will already know what to do.
