UPNEWS: Guinean’s coup Leader, Colonel Mamadu Doumbouya has bashed ECOWAS mandates to let deposed President Alpha Conde seek exile, after regional mediators attempted to mount pressure to secure his release following an extraordinary session of members of ECOWAAS this week.

Doumbouya reacted to ECOWAS decision after the chairperson of ECOWAS , Ghanian president Nana Akufo-Addo, and the president of Ivory Coast, Alassane Ouattara met Colonel Mamady Doumbouya on yesterday, Friday September 17, 2021 in Conakry.

Doumbouya maintains, he will not let deposed president Alpha Conde to seek exile neither yield to any pressure, “Conde is and will remain in Guinea” he said.

However, the Guinean coup leader and head of a special forces unit within the military, reportedly accorded the joint ECOWAS delegates to visit Conde, who has been detained earlier this month after more than 10 years in power.

Even though ECOWAS agreed on targeted sanctions on Thursday after Guinea’s military leaders failed to meet its demands, but Chairman Akufo-Addo said the delegation had β€œa very frank, fraternal discussion” with Doumbouya and his associates.

β€œI think that ECOWAS and Guinea are going to do well together,” he said, adding that they had also been able to hold a fruitful meeting with Conde.

Even though ECOWAS has called for Conde’s immediate release and for a swift transition of power, with elections held within six months, but coup Leader says, they are holding consultations with various public figures, groups and business leaders in the country to map a framework for the transition. They claim to have overthrown Conde because of concerns about poverty and corruption, and because he was serving a third term only after altering the constitution to permit it.
