IPNEWS – Monrovia: At least seven workers of Sethi Brothers steel factory early Wednesday, August 18, sustained injuries following what some have said was an accident within the factory in the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company Community along the Japan Freeway in Garnesville.
According to eyewitnesses, including some of the factory’s workers, three Indian nationals and four Liberian workers got severely injured with deep burns.
Sources informed IPNEWS that a wire that fastens the covering of the huge melting pot, containing melted iron and other toxic substances at a very high temperature, cut thereby allowing the pot’s covering to be removed and the very hot mixtures in pot to pour on the seven men.
IPNEWS also gathered that the four Liberians, who got severely burned, are usually among many other jobless young Liberians, who gather daily at the premises’ gate looking for day-boy job.
Very close sources to Sethi Brothers, owners of the steel factory, informed IPNEWS that the injured men include Nathaniel Faso, Amos Semia, Theo Tiaklay, and Sumo Kesselly. While the injured Indians are Achelal Sarooj, Hosla Parsad and Harishshad Sahni.
Some aggrieved employees of the steel factory blamed the company’s CEO, Mr. Paul Raspal, who is commonly known as “Sethi”, for the negligence.
The spokesman for the aggrieved workers, who asked that his name be kept secret, stated that they (workers) had discussed with Sethi few years to provide them safety equipment, including fire protection gears, and according to him, Sethi is yet to give them those valuable items.
“The factory can be so hot that some people can even get burnt without going very close to the melting pot. This happens to both Liberians and Indians. We’ve been complaining but no action has been taken,” the aggrieved employee, in tears, stated.
Another disenchanted employee narrated that today’s incident was very horrible as he watched the hot chemical melting the skins of his colleagues.
According to him, from the look of things, if his colleagues, are not flown out of Liberia very quickly for advanced medical treatment, they won’t survive from their injuries.
All efforts by IPNEWS to get comments from officials of Sethi Brothers Inc did not materialize up to press time.
