Pres. Weah Congratulates Benin, Swiss Confederation on 61st Independence and 730th National Day, Respectively

IPNEWS – Monrovia: President George Manneh Weah has sent a congratulatory message to the Government and people of the Republic of Benin on the occasion marking the 61st independence anniversary of that country on August 1st.

According to a Foreign Ministry release, in the message to His Excellency Mr. Patrice Talon, President of the Republic of Benin, President George Manneh Weah extended warmest congratulations and best wishes, on behalf of the Government and people of Liberia, and in his own name, to the Government and people of Benin as they commemorate this historic occasion.

The Liberian leader further entertained the hope that as Benin commemorates this joyous occasion, the cordial ties of friendship and cooperation subsisting between the two countries and peoples will be further strengthened for the mutual benefit of the two states.

The Liberian President also prayed that as the two countries continue to collaborate in furtherance of international peace and security and economic cooperation, the Almighty God will continue to endow President Patrice Talon with abundant wisdom and strength as he leads the people of Benin to greater prosperity.

August 1st is celebrated annually as Benin’s Independence Day when it gained independence from France in 1960. Benin, formerly Dahomey, gained status of overseas territory of France in 1946, after the end of World War II. In 1958 France granted it autonomy, and the territory was named the Republic of Dahomey. Full independence was achieved on August 1, 1960; Hubert Maga became the first President of the Republic of Dahomey.

Meanwhile, the Liberian leader has also sent a message of congratulations to the Government and People of the Swiss Confederation on the occasion marking the 730th anniversary of that country’s National Day.

In the message to His Excellency Mr. Guy Parmelin, President of the Swiss Confederation, President Weah expressed warm congratulations and profound best wishes to the Government and People of the Swiss Confederation on behalf of the Government and People of Liberia as they observe this historic milestone.

The President stated that Switzerland’s proud history of neutrality and the promotion of global peace continue to inspire the people of Liberia and the world at large.

The Liberian leader also recalled that Liberia and Switzerland have enjoyed long-standing friendly ties dating back to the 19th century.

He said his Government intends to strengthen the historic bond of amity by engaging in joint undertakings that will foster social and economic collaborations between the two countries and peoples.

The release further noted that as Liberians join the people of the Swiss Confederation in commemorating this historic occasion, President George Manneh Weah pledged Liberia’s continuous commitment to the shared desire for peace and prosperity for all mankind.
