"I Have No Regrets" Mo Ali Speaks Out!

IPNEWS-MONROVIA: Days after his detention and subsequent release at the headquarters of the Liberia National Police, opposition figure and Secretary-General of Unity Party, Mo Ali has vowed not to tone-down on issues affecting the Liberian people.

Mr. Ali stated that he ‘has no regrets’ for previous comments posted on his social media which prompted Police call-in and subsequent incarceration on multiple charges.

Mr. Ali, who spent his night in prison last Thursday, was released early Friday morning, that the police action against him was highly political, stressing that it was an already calculated ploy by the Coalition for Democratic Change-led government to have him sleep behind bars.

He said despite being imprisoned for the first time in his life following what he called trumped-up charges against him, he will not tone-down on landing his thought on issues that undermine the democratic tenants of the country.

It may be recalled, Mo Ali was released in the early hours of Friday, March 26, 2021, following instructions by Justice Minister, Musah Dean

It may be recalled, on Friday, March 26, 2021, at 4:00A.M., officers of the Liberia National Police released unto lawyers Mr. Mo Ali following a order from the Justice Ministry for his unconditional release.

According to Deputy Commissioner Prince Mulbah the orders to release Mr. Ali, was communicated to Police authorities early Friday morning contrary to yesterday’s media reports that Justice Minister, Cllr. Frank Musah Dean had instructed the ‘unconditional release’ of Mo Ali unto his lawyers.

Late last evening the opposition UP and the CPP bloc, had call for a citizen mass protest Friday, March 26 2021, to demand the release of Mo Ali.

Speaking to reporters early Friday morning at 1:30 A.M., lawyers representing Mo Ali stated that their client could not be released due to ‘calls from Above’, as stated by officers of the Liberia National Police.

Unity Party Secretary-General Mo Ali spent his first night at the headquarters of the Liberian National Police (LNP), contrary to late Thursday, March 25,2021, mandate by Justice Minister Musah Dean, for his unconditional release from Police detention.

“Later in the evening hours, Justice Minister Frank Musah Dean ordered the release of Mo Ali with immediate effect but a call from above could not allow Mr. Ali to be released,” Cllr. Findley Karnga told Journalists.

Cllr. Karngar stated that the action of the Weah-led government is clear manifestation to silent opposition community.

According to Cllr. Karngar those charges named above were drawn by top authority of the executive to satisfy their desires.

He said those posts by Mr. Ali are all “adjectives” and were never harmed to any of the parties mentioned.

Also speaking to reporters on Thursday was the Chairman of the Unity Party, Mr. Amin Modad.

Modad told reporters Thursday that the rights of Mo Ali were totally violated by the George Weah-led CDC government.

Modad explained that upon their arrival in the morning hours, a questionnaire was given to Mo Ali to answer to something he did after which the police insisted that they have an additional questions for him to answer but they couldn’t give those additional questions.

After spending more than one hour without producing the additional questionnaire, police authority went in a meeting and returned with several charges but prior to that they were being surrounded by more than hundred armed police officers in the conference room where the investigation was taking place.

And their movements were seized and they were being intimidated and the worst of all Mo Ali was being prevented from eating.

According to the Unity Party Chairman, Mo Ali was been charged verbally and not written charges and was expected to spend two days in jail.

The UP chairman described the action carried out by the police as ‘improper, predetermined and premeditated’ to have his party stalwart subjected to investigation rather than invitation.

Modad narrated that it is an abuse of hus partisan’s human rights and meant to silent the critical voices of opposition. He alleged that there were several elements within the ruling CDC, who had written some destructive statements on their various Facebook platforms and pages, but none has been called for questioning.

He added that the post of Mo Ali is not criminal for which he should be jailed for but all is happening to silent the voices of opposition figures and their actions are political.

Late Thursday evening, confusion ensued over whether the Minister of Justice, Attorney General Frank Musah Dean had ordered the Liberian National Police (LNP) to immediately release Mo Ali, Secretary General of the opposition UP. There were media reports that such order had been passed down to the police hierarchies.

But it seems such directive did not reached some senior members of the police force as Police Spokesman Moses Carter told IPNEWS, “It is not to my knowledge yet.” Asked if whether Mo Ali was still in their custody, he replied, “Mo Ali is still in our custody.”

Following his arrest, the LNP through its Spokesman had told IPNEWS that indeed Mo Ali had been arrested and was in their custody.

It was said that Mo Ali would spend the required 48 hours in jail awaiting court appearance.

The police announced Mo Ali’s arrest on the afternoon of Thursday, in Monrovia following an initial arrangement that he returns to the LNP headquarters within 48 hours for questioning for a post he had made on Facebook against the National Elections Commission (NEC).

IPNEWS had been told that it was upon his return to the headquarters of the LNP, that he was arrested and charged with ‘arson, terroristic threats, and criminal attempt to commit murder’.

The LNP had declared Mo Ali a person of interest after it was alleged that the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs, Mr. Nathaniel F. McGill, had reportedly ordered the National Security Agency (NSA) and LNP to arrest him.

His arrest was based on a March 1st, 2021 Facebook post, which he said, “Dear National Elections Commission (NEC), we understand the ploy. But try it and you will see what is gonna be the end result”.

According to the police, Mo Ali was invited for questioning on the Friday, March 19, 2021, but didn’t show up. Even though it is reported that his lawyer did show up and tell the police that his client wasn’t well, he was declared a wanted person.

When Mo Ali and his lawyer showed up on Monday, along with senior members of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), the police introduced another Facebook post that he had made again: “I don’t believe in the integrity of the Supreme Court. Most of the justices there have been corrupted. Justice Nagbe is a hardcore tribalist.”

He was granted 48 hours to appear again at the police headquarters Thursday, March 25.

According to media reports, the Justice Minister had said, “Until the evidence, when produced, and is reviewed and a determination made by the Attorney General, the LNP is ordered to release Mr. Ali.”

Also, at the police headquarters, Cllr. Pearl Brown-Bull, a Constitutional lawyer and one of the framers of the present Liberian Constitution, told newsmen and women that while the police was right for saying they can hold Mo Ali for 48 hours, she stated that according to the law, it has to be for “probable cause.”

She spoke to journalists near the police headquarters where angry supporters of Mo Ali had gather at a police riot squad buffer zone.
