Over stealing of screw knot on Newly Erected Streetlights: Police Threatened to Arrest Anti-Development Agents

IPNews-Monrovia: The Liberia National Police has vowed to arrest anyone caught in unscrewing knots and taking away any of the newly erected light poles beautifying the streets of Monrovia.

The LNP views such action as counterproductive to the country’s development agenda and will not hesitate to take appropriate actions in line with the rule of law.

The public is urged to report any unscrupulous act that undermines the current efforts of government in lightening of the streets of Monrovia and its environs.

On yesterday, the Government of Liberia says it is sadden over reported unfastening of screws on the newly-erected street lights along the Tubman Boulevard in Monrovia.

The government termed the action being carried out by some unknown individuals as ‘directly against the development agenda of the country and is tantamount to economic sabotage’, and vowed to arrest the situation promptly.

It can be recalled that the Government of Liberia started the street Light project during the latter part of 2020, to provide safe travelling conditions for pedestrians, vehicles and passengers as well as ensuring security at night in the city.

Speaking Thursday at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) press briefing in Monrovia, Deputy Minister for Public Affairs, Eugene L. Fahngon warned perpetrators to desist from the act of desecrating public property because these properties are for the betterment of the state and its people.

Fahngon stressed that if caught, the perpetrator (s) will face the full weight of the law.

The disregard for public property is something deeply entrenched in the Liberian society and needs to be addressed if the country is to move forward with infrastructural development, he said.

The abuse of public infrastructure like culvert and manhole covers, public buildings, amongst others, speaks to the fact that certain Liberians still believe that maintenance of public property is the sole responsibility of the Government and therefore shunned by some citizens, contrary to what obtains in other countries.
