Perspective: Is President George M. Weah serious about governance?

By: Liberian activist Martin K. N. Kollie

Amidst mounting socio-economic crises and looming uncertainties in Liberia, I just thought to reflect. Though she blundered in her second term, but former President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf was ready to lead in her first term.

She hired a team of qualified and competent mechanics to get Liberia working again. She had a reliable, responsible, accountable and result-oriented management team. She picked some of our best and brilliant minds void of partisanship and patronage. These are just a few names in her first term:

A) EJS first term – 2006:

1) Dr. Antoinette Sayeh – Minister of Finance

2) Dr. Edward B. McClain – Minister of State with Portfolio

3) Amb. Morris M. Dukuly – Minister of State for Presidential Affairs (MA)

4) Dr. Elward L. Dunn – Chief of Protocol

5) Dr. Olubanke King Akerele – Minister of Foreign Affairs

6) Dr. Eugene Shannon – Minister of Land, Mines and Energy

7) Dr. Chris Toe – Minister of Agriculture

8) Dr. Lawrence Bropleh – Minister of Information

9) Cllr. Samuel Kofi Woods II – Minister of Labor

10) Cllr. Jamesetta Howard Wollokollie – Minister of Youth and Sports

11) Amb. Willis D. Knuckles – Minister of Public Works

12) Dr. Frederick B. Norkeh – Minister of Post and Telecommunications

13) Amb. Jeremiah Suluteh – Minister of Transport

14) Dr. Toga McIntosh – Minister of Planning and Economic Affairs

B) GMW first term – 2018:

1) Mr. Samuel D. Tweah, Jr. – Minister of Finance

2) Mr. Trokon A. Kpui – Minister of State without Portfolio

3) Mr. Nathaniel F. McGill – Minister of State for Presidential Affairs

4) Mrs. Nora Finda Bundoo– Chief of Protocol

5) Mr. Gbehzohngar Findley – Minister of Foreign Affairs

6) Mr. Gesler E. Murray – Minister of Land, Mines and Energy

7) Mrs. Precious K. Tetteh – Acting Minister of Agriculture

8) Mr. Lenn Eugene Nagbe – Minister of Information

9) Mr. Moses Y. Kollie – Minister of Labor

10) Mr. D. Zoegar Wilson – Minister of Youth and Sports

11) Mr. Mabutu Nyenpan – Minister of Public Works

12) Cllr. Cooper Kruah – Minister of Post and Telecommunications

13) Mr. Samuel Wlue – Minister of Transport

14) Mr. Charles Bright – Economic Advisor

In Weah’s line-up, no one even has a Ph.D. and most of his ministers cannot even boast of a master’s degree. The two line-ups seem like “Dr. vs. Mr. and Mrs”. The CDC-led government under ex-Soccer Star George M. Weah has failed to hire mechanics with impeccable expertise, experience, and a semblance of responsible and accountable phenotype. Hence, its failure is becoming mountaineering.

Governance is at an all-time low while underperformance remains high under GMW. I am doing a comprehensive research to dig out credentials of Ministers, Deputy Ministers, and Asst. Ministers. I will publish soon.

It seems like “Incompetence”, “Partisanship”, and “Political Patronage or Reciprocity” are the highest qualifications required to serve in Weah’s hegemony. His government is yet to understand THE POWER and IMPACT of placing premium on education. The Republic is in TROUBLE. If GMW does not reshuffle in 2020, it means he is a zealot in failure.

Good evening from my end – Martin K. N. Kollie, former student leader. SHARE
