IPNews-Monrovia: Two members of the legislature have written the plenary of the House of Representatives to invite the management of LTA to provide clarifications to adjustment in pricing of GSM products

Two members of the legislature have written the plenary of the House of Representatives to invite the management of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) to provide clarifications to adjustment in the pricing of voice calls by GSM operators in Liberia.

The separate communications were proffered by Representatives Richard Koon and Byron Zahnwea of Montserrado and River Cess Counties respectively.

Representatives Koon and Zahnwea said the new policy has negatively affected the unlimited “three days free calls” promotions, as Orange-Liberia now offers forty-five minutes for three days, valued at US$1.

They noted that the LTA through its Director of Communications, Jarsea Burphy informed a local radio Monday that at no time did the regulator mandate GSM companies to cancel their “three day free calls” promotions as it is being widely speculated.

The two lawmakers reminded their colleagues that in 2017 prior to his election, Lone Star Cell/MTN apologized to the public for providing misleading information on its decision to “cancel the three free calls” promotion following public outcry.

They noted that the promotion which had been running for several years is now being considered a political product that should be dealt with meticulously to minimize the public outcry.

Following the reading of the two lawmaker’s communication, a motion was made by Nimba county district 5 Representative Samuel Kongar that the communication be sent to the Houses’ committee on post and Telecommunications to report in one week.

Meanwhile, all motions to open the two lawmakers communications by lawmakers for deliberations were denied, with a motion for reconsideration by Lofa county district one lawmaker Clarence Massaquoi also denied by House Speaker Dr. Bhofal Chambers.
