Over Ebola Rampaging In DRC, Tolbert Nyenswah Reassured Liberia’s Full Preparedness

IPNews-Monrovia: Tolbert Nyenswah, Director-General of Liberia National Public Health Institute (NPHIL), says Liberia is fully prepared to combat the emergence of an Ebola case.

Colbert Nyenswah stated that the country experience of the 2013 Evola crisis has positioned Liberia to fight any form of the Ebola virus and assured that there is no cause for panic as fear rages on of a reemergence following continued discovery and deaths of people from Evola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo -DRC.

Nyenswah comments come days following the declaration of the Ebola Virus Disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a global health emergency.

Nyenswah said the Government of Liberia is working closely with its international partners to ensuring that Liberia’s health system is resilient enough to fight any outbreak of disease that may occur in the country.

“We are applying surveillance at all entry points of the country through our joint security as a way of securing the citizenry from an epidemic,” Nyenswah said.

He also called on citizens and residents of Liberia to continue to follow all preventative measures that were introduced during the Ebola outbreak in the country in 2014.

Nyenswah, however, pledged the government of Liberia support to help with the fight against the EVD in the DRC because, according to him, Liberia now has the technical know-how about the disease.

Meanwhile, the NPHIL Director-General has said that the decision by the WHO to declare the EVD outbreak in DRC a global health emergency is in the right direction, but long overdue.

“The EVD outbreak in the DRC is almost a year now and it is now that the WHO is declaring it a global health emergency,” Nyenswah indicated.

The outbreak in DR Congo has killed at least 1,600 people since its first occurrence in 2016.
