ECC Calls FOR ELECTORAL REFORM

IPNews-Monrovia-Liberia: The Election Coordinating Committee, on yesterday, Wednesday March 27, 2019 held a one day conference at the Bella Cassa Hotel under the theme:’strengthen Liberia’s democracy through Electoral reform’.

According to a release from the ECC, the Conference brought together stakeholders, International partners, Political parties, Youth groups, Civil society Organizations media institutions and among others.

At the end of the conference, together they concluded with a resolution which was read by the executive Director of the women NGO Secretariat of Liberia Madam Marpue speare.
the national youth federation of Liberia, civil society organizations traditional Council, political parties, women groups, youth groups across the country, media institutions ,Ladies and Gentlemen.

We are mindful of the important role election play in consolidation of peace and democracy currently, since the need for electoral reform reality and reflect contemporarily and the need to address electoral challenges that have occurred during previous election, have here assemble at the conference at belle Cassa Hotel 3rd street Sinkor Monrovia, Liberia to deliberate On key issues options that be can consider by the national legislature legal reform.

Do here by result on the following recommendations On the four category of reform.
That there be a body outside of the national Election Commission should be responsible to carry out civic voter education process around the country.

Civic Education should be included in the national school Curriculum

That article 83 A. of the 1986 constitution should be remove. The article 83 A. of the 1986 constitution stated that, Voting for president and vice president ,members of the Senate and members of the House of representatives shall be conducted on the second Tuesday following in October of election year.

That the Government of Liberia and it international partners should invest in the biometry voters registration process lavishing on the national Identification which is currently on going around the Country.

The Government should made financial resources available on time to enable national election Commission and carry on sufficient advertisements, also to enable NEC to plan and purchase electoral logistics on time.

That the formulation of political parties should be prioritized by the national legislature.

That session 5.1 and session 5.2 of the core of conduct should be refuse.

That article 83 C. of the 1986 Constitution which stated that the return of the elections shall be declared by the elections commission not later than fifteen days after the casting of the ballots. Any party or candidates who complaints about the manner in which the elections were conducted or who challenges the results thereof shall have the right to file a complaint with the elections commission. Such Complaint must be filed not later than seven days after the announcement of the election. should be amended to allow the establishment of an independent election.
