IPNews-Monrovia-Liberia-Sunday-25 November 2018: A joint team from the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU) Liaison Office in Liberia and the Office of the Special Representative of the President of the ECOWAS Commission in Liberia (ECOWAS) have expressed grave concern on the recent violent incidents that took place at a campaign rally in Monrovia, ahead of the November 20 legislative by-elections in Montserrado District 13 and Sinoe County.

According to the release, the UN, AU, and ECOWAS condemned the acts of violence and stated that it is inimical to the continued peace and stability in the country as well as to the holding of credible, transparent and democratic elections.

However, the UN, AU, and ECOWAS have welcomed the prompt intervention of the Liberia National Police (LNP) in carrying out a thorough investigation with a view to identifying the perpetrators of the violent incident and ensure that the law takes its full course.

“Liberia has taken great strides in building peace and stability,” the statement said. “It is therefore of utmost importance for Liberia’s continued stability and development to avoid any incident that may derail the country from its current peaceful course.”

Meanwhile, the release also calls on all stakeholders to take immediate steps to refrain from acts and utterances that could undermine the credibility of the electoral process and the legitimacy of its outcome.

It can be recalled that on last Saturday, Nov. 17, at a campaign rally in District#13 violence broke out between partisans of CDC’s candidate John Weah and those of UP’s candidate Cornelia Kruah-Togba in which several persons sustained serious wounds. The incident has been condemned across the country because, many said, it had the propensity to derail the country’s hard-won peace.
