MCC To Address Street Selling Via Dialogue – Official

IPNews-Monrovia, Liberia-27 June 2018: The Deputy Director for Operations at the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), Col. Sekou K. Faikai, has said that the Corporation will endeavor through the use of dialogue and constructive engagements to solve the problem of unregulated street selling in the Liberian capital.

โ€œThe public should be assured that the MCC under the leadership of Mayor Jefferson Koijee is determined to utilize the method of peaceful dialogue and constructive engagement to solve the problem of unregulated street selling that has always challenged the city,โ€ Faikai said.

Speaking recently at the start of a two-day workshop aimed at regulating street selling held at the Monrovia City Hall in Monrovia, Faikai noted that street selling has been a serious headache for the city of Monrovia for so many years.

The workshop, which was organized by the MCC in collaboration with the Federation of Petty Traders and Informal Workers Union of Liberia (FPTIWUL), was also aimed at finding the means to establish a suitable site where petty traders can sell their wares rather than using the sidewalks or main streets for trading.

It was also intended to discuss the way forward on the establishment of a database for FPTIWUL members.

According to Faikah, the MCC has begun a sustained engagement with the street vendors to discuss several issues relating to regulation of their activities.

He said the process began in early April 2018 with City Mayor Koijee and the leadership of the National Petty Trader Union of Liberia, which is now referred to as the “Federation of Petty Traders and Informal Workers Union of Liberia.
