Millennium Challenge Account Liberia To Construct US$15M Technical Training Center for LEC

IPNewws- Monrovia, Liberia-18 June  2018: Millennium Challenge Account Liberia-MCAL, has ended a  day media orientation on the operations and duties programme of  the Millennium Challenge Accounts Liberia for senior Media personnel at the Cape Hotel, Mamba point, in Monrovia.

The purpose of the orientation according to organizers is to build media understanding for effective compact programme awareness on the MCAL projects.

In his welcome remark, the CEO, MCA Liberia said that the orientation is one among the lines of program the Compact have for the media in getting proper information to the people on various project activities of the Compact.

Prof. Monie R. Captan said the Millennium Challenge Account -MCA and its local implementing agency, Millennium Challenge Account Liberia-MCAL , is working hard to meet various target goals in project areas of across the country-adding the project is a five years agreement which has entered into two and half years’ covering project focus like electricity, and road rehabilitation.

Prof Captan said the US257Million MCC compact with Liberia was designed to increase economic growth, reduce poverty and improve the lives of Liberians by increasing access to reliable and affordable electricity, by strengthening the capacity of the electricity sector, as well as improving planning and the implementation of road maintenance across Liberia.

The University f Iberia political science instructor added that the MCC Compact has already been made significant support of US$147million, as the single largest donor to the reconstruction works at the Mt. Coffee Hydropower plant.

Speaking further, the MCAL CEO continued that empowering communities with electricity for business growth is also their major concern.

He intimated that the MCC’s compact as part of improving and enhancing Liberia’s post-war electricity capacity, will begin the construction of state of the art training center with modern equipment for the training of technical staff of the Liberia Electricity Corporation- LEC.

Additionally, Mr. Captan said the MCC-MCAL under the Compact will begin the setting up of   customers service centers across the country to improve service delivery, and seek to strengthen the full establish of the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission- LERC, including the anticipated appointment of Commissioners by the President of Liberia  .

He disclosed that the compact will also contribute an additional US$15Million to match the government of Liberia’s funding for critical road maintenance on primary network commencing the budget year.

The CEO used the opportunity to called on the media to agent of change in supporting the works of the MCC if only the project should succeed.

Speaking on behalf of the government, the Minister of Information Lenn Eugene Nagbe said the government of Liberia is fully committed to the undertakings of the Millennium Challenge Account in its over project out line-adding the government is aware of most the development by MCC in the country.

Minister Nagbe added that the government will continue to be very supportive of the works of MCAL to combating most of the issues, such as, road construction, education, health and electricity as major challenge across the country.

The government spokesman told the gathering that it is government desire to see that the country move forward like other countries in the area of development. He said the government do not lack plans in implementation of project, a thing he described as a political will.

The forum afforded media personnel the opportunity to have an insight of the programme and activities of the Millennium Challenge Account Liberia with power point presentations from each departments of the Compact.

The Millennium Challenge Account is a United States of America miti-sectorial support arm which targets greater national support needs of countries maintaining good governance and transparency.
