Police arrest Tortoise Base Commander Roosevelt Demann; Awaits Court Trail

IPNews-Monrovia,Liberia-4 May 2018: The Commander of Tortoise Base Deport in Red Light identified as Roosevelt Demann has been arrested and sent to jail.

Commander Demann was arrested and sent to jail and awaiting court trial for allegedly killing an unarmed motorcyclist on the 29th day of April 2018.

According to the writ of arrest, the alleged act of the defendant was unlawful, illegal, wicked and a willful violation of section 14.1 of the new penal law of Liberia, purposely and knowingly caused the death of Beyan Lamie by shooting and killing with his assigned weapon contrary to law.

The Tortoise Base Commander Roosevelt Demann was charged for murder and sent behind bar pending court trail.

According to the police charge sheet, Commander Demann was in pursuit of victim Beyan Lamie from the red light commercial hub in Paynesville to Lamie’s relative’s house around the Soul Clinic Junction in Paynesville at the hour of 10pm, resulting to tussle.

“It was revealed that victim Lamie was finally arrested by Demann, wherein a tussle ensued.” The charge sheet read.

During preliminary investigation, it was established that, defendant Roosevelt was an active police officer and was assigned at the zone five deport.

In related development, Police inspector General, Patrick Suelu has reemphasized that no law enforcer who commits crime will tolerated to go unpunished, because they are trained law enforcers who should at all times abide by the laws.

IG Suelu said, commander Demann and six others are currently being disrobed and suspended for time indefinite.

In the same development, the National Board Chair of the motorcyclist Union, Rev. J Lurther Tarpeh, has thanked the police for arrest and call on the government to ensure a speedy investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

He also call on the Judiciary branch to speed up the trail and not don’t take lightly the case now before.

“In the next few weeks we hope to hear the verdict on this murder case to serve as deterrent to any law enforcer or persons who thinks that he or she can carry out any crime on poor citizens who are hustling to find food for themselves.” Rev Tarpeh lamented.
