IPNews-Monrovia,Liberia-23 March 2018: River Gee County District #1 Representative Alexander Poure has vowed never to affix his signature to recall the Citizenship and Land Ownership Resolutions from committees’ room, because his district is not ready to give or share their lands with ‘white people.’
Rep. Poure said because of the economic condition of the people in rural Liberia, especially in River Gee, coupled with increment in the incidences of financial crises that have rocked the global economy, his constituency will reject the Landownership Bill, because the citizens are afraid should the economically empowered ‘whites’ buy all of their lands.
In an interview with journalists on Wednesday in his Capitol Building office, Rep. Poure argued that it is better for the people to strive and sleep peacefully on lands they inherited from their forefathers than to have no lands.
“We are not ready for landownership to be taken from our people,” Rep. Poure said, adding, “We will not sign and will not vote for that kind of law.”
On the issue of Dual Citizenship, Poure registered his disagreement with such idea of a non-negro becoming citizen of Liberia, but promised to only support Liberians who lost their citizenship to other countries and want to regain that status.
Rep. Poure’s statement is in support of the one made earlier by Chief Imam Ali Krayee, head of Liberia’s National Imam Council, denouncing the idea to grant citizenship to people of non-negro descent, which he believes will create a new class system in Liberia, where people who are far more advanced intellectually and economically will eventually take over the main cities and towns, while the poorly-prepared indigenous retreat to the slums.
