Another Protest Action in a new government Arena

IPNews-Monrovia,Liberia-20 February 2018: Protesters in the early hours of Monday morning erected road blocks along the Stockton Creek bridge linking the Caldwell community to Bushrod Island.

Hundreds of residents of the Caldwell community on the Bushrod Island outside Monrovia staged the protest in demand of electricity to their communities.

They claimed that the Management of the Liberian Electricity Corporation-LEC, has refused to listen to their appeal for equal share of electricity enjoyed by residents of Bushrod Island and Central Monrovia.

Some spoken to tells the Independent Probe Newspaper that it was unthinkable to note that authorities of the Liberia Electricity Corporation vehemently refused to provide electricity to the Caldwell community but rather interested in passing high tension wires over their community in complete disservice to residence of the communities.

“This is our Township, and it is very unfair that the LEC people will be doing this to us. My friend, I am telling you that they just passed the wires over our various houses and refused to even give us current. Mamie Zeon, a resident of Caldwell community told our reporter.

The protest saw the blocking of the only bridge connecting the settlement with the rest of Monrovia.

Some aggrieved residents alleged that as host community of the Mount Coffee Hydro Plant, the Liberia Electricity Corporations has deliberately refused to supply them electricity for the past 5 years.

They lamented that nearby communities and slum communities have all been supplied electric power in total disgust to residents of Caldwell regardless of series of efforts made to supply them with electricity that they would pay for.

Yesterday’s incident resulted to thousands of commuters and residents being stranded across the Stockton Creek.

Police Emergency Response Unit-PSU responded with rapid deployed to restore calm giving way to negotiations with the aggrieved residents.
