IPNews-Monrovia: It is now clear that recent report by the Independent Probe Newspaper, in November 2019, that members of the Legislature were going to return for a single purpose of passing the bill for the printing of new Liberian Bank Notes and the swift confirmation of newly nominated Central Bank Governor J. Aloysius Tarlue, is now evident by the weekend proclamation by President for the extension of full extraordinary session by members of the national Legislature.
It may be recalled President George M. Weah late Sunday, evening December 2, 2019, finally issued a Proclamation of Extension for members of the House of Representatives and the Senate to reconvene in Special or Extraordinary Session for seven days,
The president proclamation stated that beginning yesterday Tuesday, December 3 through Tuesday, December 10, 2019 lawmakers are expected to return from recess to discuss or act upon vital matters of national emergency and concern.
Our Legislative reporter covering the National Legislature observed that the President’s Proclamation did not elaborate on what the “vital matters of national emergency and concern.
However, a ranking member of that body speaking to IPNews condition of name not being mention, said, high on the agenda is the deliberation and subsequent passage of the request from the Central Bank of Liberia’s (CBL) for permission to print new Liberian banknotes.
Our source also informed IPNews that during the seven days requested by the Liberian leader, members of the Liberian Senate will used the occasion to hold confirmation hearing for newly nominated CBL Executive Governor Jolue Aloysius Tarlue.
It can be recall September 2019, the CBL through the office of the president requested permission for lawmakers on Capitol Hills to print LRD$34 billion which would be used to replace the local currency which has in recent months being rocked by unprecedented inflations.
The issuance of the President’s Proclamation to recall the 54th Legislature from Annual Break is in consonance with Article 32(b) of the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia which provides that the President shall, on his own initiative or upon receipt of a certificate signed by at least one fourth of the total membership of each House, and by proclamation, extend a regular session of the Legislature beyond the date for adjournment or call a special or extraordinary session of that body to discuss or act upon matters of national emergency and concern.
