MCSS Students Go Amok for Lack of Instructors Salary Payment, But GOL Reiterates Payment for two month Arrears

IPNews-Monrovia: Students of the Monrovia Consolidated School System-MCSS, are continuing their rampaging in Liberiaโ€™s Capital Monrovia, in demand of salary arrears payment of their instructors.

The students when amok early Tuesday morning blocking major routes to the city center and the Capitol Hill office of President George Manneh Weah, whose government has come under serious pressure over the last few weeks.

It may be recall, last month, health workers, Nurses and Medical Doctors, staged a peaceful protest for lack of payment and medical drugs to cater to huge influx of patience at various health facilities cross Liberia.

The protest which was soon call off when the government of Liberia and protesting health workers reached a compromised to begin payment of nearly four months of salary arrears.

Now, itโ€™s protesting students most of whom are from age 10-27, who made up most of the voting population which brought the government of President George Weah to power.

Earlier this year, the government announced a free tuition for all public schools but conditions at most of the public institutions remain unfavorable.

Last month, professors ย at the state run University of Liberia, also threaten to lay down their instructional materials if the government does not adhered to commitment reached to settle their salary arrears and incentives for the last four months.

The ongoing protest by MCSS students have send fear among private school students and owners, most of whom are children of well-off parents.

Minor clashes ensued between students of the Seven Days Adventist High school on Camp Johnson road, with stone throwing and bitter exchanges, which was brought under control by officer of the Police Response Unit-PSU.

Across town, scores of MCSS students are seen littering and in uncontrollable moves towards town after a failed attempt to beat up Education Ministry officials early this morning.

At the state treasury, the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, which Samuel D. Tweah, serves as Minister, is a huge presence of Police and other paramilitary officers seeking to protect it from rampaging students.

There has been no official statement from the government of Liberia on the studentโ€™s action, but late yesterday a press release from authorities of the MCSS circulated, that the government and the leadership of the Teachers Association of Liberia to begin payment of salary arrears today.

The protesting studentsโ€™ action have brought the entire city to a stand stay of uncertainties.

Meanwhile, the student protest have spread into the sinkor suburb with report of ongoing stone throwing at the J.J. Roberts, Memorial School, Levi Williams School and the Seven Days Adventist school.
