LEC: Regional Stakeholders Commit to Electricity Import from Ghana to Liberia by December 2024

IPNEWS: The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has announced that regional stakeholders have pledged their commitment to facilitating the importation of electricity from Ghana to Liberia by December 2024. This crucial development is part of ongoing efforts to improve Liberia’s energy supply and ensure consistent access to electricity across the country.

The commitment was secured during a series of high-level meetings between LEC officials and regional energy partners, including the West African Power Pool (WAPP) and authorities from Ghana. The agreement aims to address the power shortages that have long hindered Liberia’s development, with a focus on ensuring that imported electricity will contribute to economic growth, social stability, and enhanced public services.

According to LEC, the initiative is part of the regional energy cooperation framework under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which seeks to promote energy interconnectivity across member states. By leveraging Ghana’s surplus electricity generation, Liberia will be able to import much-needed power to meet its growing demand.

“The commitment by regional stakeholders to ensure the importation of electricity from Ghana by December 2024 is a major milestone for Liberia’s energy sector,” an LEC spokesperson stated. “This initiative will help stabilize the electricity grid, reduce the reliance on expensive domestic generation, and provide a reliable source of power for both households and businesses.”

As part of the agreement, efforts are underway to upgrade the necessary infrastructure, including transmission lines and substations, to facilitate the cross-border flow of electricity. Additionally, LEC has been working closely with international partners and development agencies to secure the necessary financing and technical expertise to ensure the success of the project.

The importation of electricity from Ghana is expected to significantly reduce Liberia’s power generation costs, which have been a major challenge due to the country’s reliance on expensive diesel generators. This initiative will also support the expansion of electrification projects in rural areas, contributing to the government’s goal of achieving universal electricity access.

LEC noted that the electricity import project aligns with broader national development goals, including the ARREST agenda, which emphasizes the importance of infrastructure development in driving economic growth and reducing poverty.

With the expected arrival of electricity from Ghana by the end of 2024, Liberia’s energy sector is poised for a major transformation that will positively impact the lives of millions of Liberians.
