Liberia: Corruption Ghost Roams Boakai’s Gov’t

IPNEWS: The Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) has called for decisive action against Commerce Minister Amin Modad, citing potential violations of the 2024 budget law. This plea comes as reports emerge of a controversial US$150,000 request from Modad’s ministry to purchase a vehicle, which has sparked public outcry and allegations of mismanagement of state resources.

At a press conference on October 3, Atty. Gerald Yeakula, CENTAL’s Program Manager, expressed grave concerns over the use of funds intended for trade capacity building being diverted for what he termed a “luxury vehicle” for the minister. Yeakula argued that this expenditure undermines the government’s commitment to improving the lives of Liberians.

The Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) clarified that only US$96,000 had been approved for the vehicle, but the controversy surrounding the initial request has not abated. In response to the allegations, Minister Modad vehemently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the LRA’s report vindicates him and reflects his commitment to transparency.

Unity Party Chair Luther Tarpeh has called for an investigation into Modad’s actions, urging him to clear his name amidst growing scrutiny. Despite this, Modad defended his ministry’s efforts to stabilize essential commodities in the face of global economic challenges, asserting that claims of corruption are unfounded.

As President Boakai prepares to return from the United States, expectations are mounting for his administration to address these allegations and restore public confidence in Liberia’s governance. 𝐵𝑦: 𝑇𝑎𝑟𝑟 𝑈.𝐵. 𝐺𝑎𝑟𝑛𝑒𝑡𝑡
