IPNEWS: At least 60% students from Liberia passed in two of the major subjects of Biology and Economics in the WAEC 2024 exams according to a new release by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

WAEC Monrovia Office Monday, September 16, 2024, released of results of the Senior High School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), including ninth grade and lower levels.

At a news conference in Monrovia, the Head of WAEC’s Monrovia Office, Dale Gbotoe said the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates was administered at 357 centers in the fifteen counties and the Republic of Guinea from May 15 to June 25, 2024 showing an overall performance of the candidates at the passing rate of at least a subject on the Examination.

Mr. Gbotoe stated that this year’s results were encouraging as compared to previous years especially their counterparts who sat the same examination nationally for the first time in 2018.

The 2024 WASSCE was administered in the category of nine subjects with Arts candidates sitting for seven of the nine subjects while the Science candidates sat a minimum of eight of the nine subjects.

However, WAEC says the “results for some candidates and in some instances, all candidates from some schools are being withheld pending further investigation and determination by the appropriate committee of Council.”

Seven hundred and twenty-five (725) candidates’ results are being withheld for their involvement in four types of Examination Malpractice,” the WAEC result show.

The 725 candidates’ results withheld were involvement in various types of examination malpractices, including the use of cellphones and foreign materials. Specific figures include: 534 candidates from 12th-grade schools in the WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examination).

26 schools in the Junior High category faced withheld results due to violations.

The LNAT was taken by 28,019 out of 28,866 registered third graders. Of those, 23,969 students passed, while 4,050 did not. Grand Gedeh County stood out with an impressive 95.45% pass rate.

For the 6th-grade exam, 42,415 students participated, with 38,504 passing and 3,911 failing. Schools in the Guinea corridor achieved a remarkable 98.5% pass rate, leading the results.

A total of 44,980 students sat for the 9th-grade exams, with 41,833 passing and 3,147 failing. Female students slightly outperformed their male counterparts, particularly excelling in Social Studies. Schools from the Guinea corridor once again showed strong results, recording a 100% pass rate.

In 2024, the overall performance of 12th graders in the WASSCE showed significant improvement compared to the 2018 national exams. Students took exams in nine subjects, with arts students sitting for seven and science students sitting for at least eight.

WAEC head further explained that the names of top-performing students and schools have not been announced yet due to ongoing investigations. Concerns were raised after large groups of students from certain schools scored similarly, prompting inquiries into potential irregularities.

Meanwhile, the 2024 candidates in Maryland County “recorded the highest percentage pass rate of 98.29% on the West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
