IPNEWS: The National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE) has reignited plans to implement a total reform in Liberia’s higher education sector aimed at providing quality education for Liberians.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) regular press briefing on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, in Monrovia, NCHE Executive Director, Edward Lama Wonkeryor disclosed his institutionโ€™s plan to launch a vigorous campaign towards the establishment of quality assurance cells at each accredited institution.

He said this will help the delivery of programs that will be monitored at the institutional level.

He added that strengthening quality assurance for higher education institutions involves checking faculty quality, curriculum usefulness, and lecturers’ attendance, furthering that the NCHE is beginning to work with policymakers as a means of soliciting support towards the verification of credentials of staff within the higher education sector.

Dr. Wonkeryor reaffirmed his institution’s plan to weed out bogus and substandard institutions from the higher education system.

“This can be achieved through regular and systematic monitoring of universities and colleges to establish their compliance to guidelines and standards set by the NCHE. This is very important to battle the many quack colleges and universities that are regularly creeping at all levels of the Liberian society, with some offering masterโ€™s degrees and PhDs”, the head of higher education boss explained.

According to him, the entity’s “Quality Assurance Department” has already commenced a vigorous campaign to identify and locate such institutions for the appropriate actions.

To effectuate the workings of the institution, the NCHE official added that his institution intends to construct a modernized headquarters from where the entity will adequately and passionately coordinate and administer the activities of higher education.

“This campaign is progressing well, with two (2) acres of land already acquired, deeded, and probated, thanks to the University of Liberia. We have also submitted our request to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China for assistance to construct the office building for the NCHE”, Wonkeryor disclosed.
