UL Crisis Degenerates: Faculty Boycott Classes over Safety Concerns

— As SUP Violates Political Rally Ban

IPNEWS: With less than 72hrs since authorities at the University of Liberia, imposed a ban on all political rallies on the campuses of the University, the University Faculty Senate says it will begin an unconditional disengagement of academic lectures at UL over consistent failure to protect the faculty from students’ violence on all campuses of UL.

The University of Liberia Faculty Association (ULFA), in a release issued Friday, March 17, states that it has with immediate effect, decided to disengage or stay away from all academic activities of the university until appropriate security measures can be put into place to guarantee the safety of all lecturers of UL.

ULFA said the decision was unanimously made during the executive committee meeting of ULFA on UL’s main campus, Capitol Hill.

“All students are therefore advised to stay away from all UL campuses until further decisions can be made for lecturers to return to class. It was further decided that we as lecturers will only return to class when the security condition on all UL campuses is improved and measures are put into place to guarantee our safety.” The ULFA statement read.

The decision according to sources within ULFA was triggered by Friday, March 17, disruption of normal classes on the Fendell Campus of the University of Liberia, in gross violation of Thursday’s ban on political activities on UL campuses by UL authorities.

Earlier Friday morning, students emerged from bushes setting up roadblocks and burning tires along the Monrovia, Kakata highway which led to a traffic jam and fear of passengers.

The action of students of SUP, according to a spokesman is triggered by the failure of the government to institute an investigation into what led to Monday, March 13, violence at the UL Capitol hill campus.
