IPNEWS: As a feminist-driven organization, Women in Agriculture for Sustainable Development (WASUDEV) has joined organizations across the world in commemorating this year’s 16 Days Activism.
WASUDEV is aware that women and girls in Liberia continue to face diverse forms of violence in different sectors with agriculture being no exception.
Based on this, the Executive Director, Hawa Dunor-Varney says the organization is always ready to initiate or collaborate with organizations in protecting women and girls in the country and beyond.
It is established that in Liberia, the National Gender Profile recognized women for contributing Immensely in the sector for providing over provide 60 percent of the agricultural labor force.
This includes 76 percent of labor to cash crop production, 93 percent to food crop production, and 85 percent of all labor for marketing and trading respectively.
Despite these enormous contributions, women farmers continue to face several key structural and technical barriers that limit their access to land, information, finance, infrastructure, technologies, and markets.
Gender norms about ownership of land, assets, and resources mean that women are denied socio-economic and civil, and political rights, which is a form of structural violence.
Meanwhile, WASUDEV is urging all to unite during this 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence aimed at removing these barriers.
Women in Agriculture for Sustainable Development is a local nongovernmental that works in rural communities to improve the living conditions of women and girls through human solidarity, agribusiness development that creates prosperity, local economy, empowerment for peace, security, and women’s representation in decision-making.
