Niko Ivanka Victims’ Families Abandoned

IPNEWS: The family members of the West African Examination Council (WEAC) staff who died in the MV Niko Ivanka Boat wreck on July 17, 2021, while on duty heading to the southeastern part of the Country have accused the government of not showing any concern since they lost their loved ones.

The bereaved family members made the statement during the one-year memorial service held at the Ellen Johnson Ministerial Complex in Congo 13 months after their demise on August 17, 2022.

One of the widows, Mrs. Mary Sackie Joe the wife of Abraham T. Joe explained, that her late husband worked for the Government through the Liberia National Police for over two decades and died on duty without achieving anything for him and his family.

She said it’s been over one year since she lost her husband, and the police authority has never shown to their family nor provided a single help for her and the Children.

“I am so much disappointed in the LNP that this Man worked with for almost 30 years from 1993, he left nothing to show from the Liberia National Police. Only Mr. Gale Gbotoe has always been with the Family from burial to date”, Mrs. Mary Sackie Joe.

In tears, she warned those who want to join the Liberia National Police “to stop wasting their time and put their precious time into good use.”

According to her, even the promises made by the Minister of Education, Ansu Sonii to provide University scholarships to family members of those who lost their lives are fruitless as there is no single scholarship provided by the Ministry.

Meanwhile, the head of WEAC Liberia, Mr. Gale Gbotoe has called on the Ministry of Education to accelerate their efforts towards their promises in order to ensure the Children of those who lost their lives on duty enroll in universities.

Even though Gbotoe couldn’t disclose the amount compensated to the family of the eight people who lost their lives while on duty, he acknowledged his institution has completed compensating the family members.

Gbotoe also said that whatever compensation is given to them is not enough to pay for the life of their beloved ones but needs collective efforts to continue working with them especially while they are going through grief.
