C-190 Pending Ratification to Eradicate Violence and Harassment at Work

IPNEWS-Monrovia: Scores of Legislators have assured the Liberia Labor Congress and their international partners, “ActionAid Liberia with Solidarity Center” to  support the ratification of the convention (#190) bill with its recommendation (C-206) to eliminate violence and harassment in the world of work.

During a one-day introduction and presentation of the C-190 program hosted by the Liberia Labor Congress on Friday, December 10, 2021, the lead presenter Atty. Kim Harris explained and provided the importance of it ratification.

According to her, the C-190 will provide decent working environment and eradicate violence and harassment at work places.

However, the Lawmakers with other stakeholders who participated have affirmed their support to have the C-190 ratified.

At the one-day C-190 introductory and presentation program held at the Royal Grand Hotel in Sinkor, Monrovia Representative Beyan D. Howard of District# 5 in Lofa County, Byron W. Zahnwea of District#2 in Rivercess County, Alexander Poure of District #1 River Gee county and Sampson Q. Wieh of Grand Kru District #2 among other Lawmakers hailed the ratification of the C-190 bill.

The lawmakers however, committed to lobby with colleagues to have the Convention #190 bill ratified when it hits the flow of the Capitol building in other to have violence and harassment at work eliminated.

Other participants who hailed the C-190 bill include; Jestina Kanneh Jaward, the ActionAid Liberia program Coordinator, Cllr. Tiawon Gongloe outgoing President  of the Liberia National Bar Association, Representative of the Solidarity Center in Liberia among others stated that, violence at world of work are humans rights violations as all rights of humans are to be protected and respected.

On the part of (LLC), the national chairlady Ms. Venus Quite said, the ratification of C-190 will bring great achievement into the Nation’s democracy as 90 % of the citizens are workers or employees including the Legislature.

Given the overview of their presentation, they said the global community has made it clear that violence and harassment at work will not be tolerated and must end.

According to them, on June 2, 2019, the ILO’s International Labor Conference adopted the Centenary Declaration on the Future of Work, expressing a clear commitment to a world of work free from violence and harassment.

“On the same day, the Centenary Conference brought this commitment to life with the adoption of the Violence and Harassment Convention (No. 190) and Recommendation (No. 206)”

“The leaders of the World of work had made history, and produced the first ever international standards aimed at ending violence and harassment in the world of work” they asserted.
